PS3 turns on, green light for 2 seconds then dead

38 Replies 143,279 Views Created 30-03-2012

My brother's PS3 recently developed a fault, PS3 turns on, you get a green light for 2 seconds maximum then it turns off, sometimes it won't even turn on at all.

Has anyone else had this issue and sorted it out, I suspect it's power supply might be shot.

Its possible the power supply is shot but it could be other things and is way to hard to diagnose over the interwebs.

Call your local Playstation support centre and see what can be done, thats your best bet.

Hey supe73,

Sorry to hear of your brother's console woes.

If the power light is turning off completely, the best way to determine where the fault lies, is to replace the power cable (a slim PS3 uses a standard 'figure 8' power cable, you may have one for your stereo or DVD player) - using an alternate power outlet, and not using a power board.

If you're still having the same issue, then we can determine it's a problem with the console itself.

Best then to contact your local PlayStation Support Centre for further advice.

Hey man, whats up?

heard about your brothers ps3. feel sorry.

anyways have you got the CD out of there?

i've got a way that might help.

1st, make sure that the powere switch is off for the ps3.

2nd, press and hold the eject button for atleast 5 secs.

3rd, switch on the power and it will start to blow all the dust out of the system.

Nows your chance. Rapidly press the eject button until the CD comes out.

Thats when i found out that my MW3 disc was broken....:Stupid:

hope that helps

Hi ANGRYfijian4,

This is a standard force eject method for a 40GB and 80GB console only.

All you need to do is:

Start with power switch on the rear set to "Off"

Place your finger on the eject on the front whilst turning it back "On"

Once you hear the fans kick in, you can take your finger off the "Eject" button.

You may need to do this twice.

a possibilty is under were the power and eject buttons are theres a ribbon depending on model. its the ribbon thats the problem get a new ribbon and it should work fine. if not then its more than likely the power source were everyone automatically presumes is the problem but i suspect the ribbon under the power and eject buttons...if this information dont solve it then i hope it helps someone else...

Hi captinescar123,

Sorry to hear about your issue there.

The description that you have provided is an indicator of a hardware fault with the console.

The only remedy i can suggest for this would be to contact PlayStation Support on the numbers below and organise a repair/exchange with them.

I have included their contact details below.

Australia: 1300 365 911

New Zealand: 09 415 2447

Cheers

hey, i've experianced the same problem and i can tell you how to fix it!

first open up the ps3 and dissemble it compleatly.

then once you have the motherboard take medical alcohol and rub the dark green lines on it *VERY* gently

once its clean re-assemble it and it should be fixed

RSVP me if it works!

it worked for me so it should work for you!

It seems I've been having a very similar problem.. how ever.. I've been doing some more research (unfortunately) Google's told me that it's the Yellow Light Of Death.. which is a result of over heating(?)

The other downside to this whole drama my end is that my other/second playstation is crashing every so often.. freezes, has a rather odd overlay on the display.. which then forces me to reboot the system and lose where I was in the game.. sometimes.. I don't even get past the menu lol =/

I think my question is, I've not really seen too many places/companies in Perth that repairs PS3's

Don't get me wrong.. with the expected announcement (fingers crossed) we've all been waiting for in regards to the 4th edition of such a fantastic ("It's a Sony!") console, this little "bump in the road" HASN'T put me off from buying the PS4.. but I'm not so sure I'd like to be twiddling my thumbs with nothing to play.

With that said I'm wondering if ANYONE knows of somewhere that would repair this two older machines (original 60 with 500gb hdds in them)...... in the mean time... I'm having withdrawls and I'm starting to get easy movement back in my thumbs and fingers! (sorry.. warped sense of humor lol) =P

You have experienced the yellow light of death (YLOD). It indicates a general hardware fault and is usually caused by dry cracked solder on the CPU and/or GPU. There are other causes, but they are less common.

You'll either have to get your console repaired, replaced, or buy a new one. For the first two options, contact your local Sony support line. You can find the phone numbers in the back cover of any of your game manuals, or in the manual that came with your PS3.
