100mb Virgin Media Package, only 0.5 - 12mb on PS3!

Hi,

I've just bought a PS3 160Gb Slim two weeks ago and I've been having some trouble with the internet connection. I really need it to wireless as it's located in my Lounge at the back of the house. My Virgin Superhub is next to my PC in the office near the front of the house.

However, the wireless has been complete pants. I'm lucky to get 2mb dowload most of the time, even checking on the PS3 web browser. I use Netflix and I'm not getting through a 40 minute show without it stopping 4-6 times to load. Great if you need lots of toilet breaks! :smileyfrustrated:

I decided to go the wired route with my PS3, reluctantly, but it will involve running an external cable around the house then into the living room where the PS3 is set up. About 30 metres in total!

However, last night, I moved the PS3 into the office to test it out before I go spending money on all that cable! Using my PC's ethernet cable, my PS3 only acheived 12Mb connection when connected to the Superhub. I'm not expecting it to get 100Mb but this surely isn't the most I can expect is it?

My wireless is very inconsistant with the PS3, even when it's right next to the Superhub. It ranges from 0.5Mb to 12Mb (if I'm having a lucky moment!). It's constantly changing.

Does anyone think it could be a PS3 problem? It's only 2 weeks old so I can still return it if necessary. It just seems so odd that if I connect any laptop / PC by ethernet, I get 100+Mb and all my other wireless devices (Ipad 2, Macbook and a Desktop PC) get 40Mb approx give or take. I'd be more than happy to acheive 40Mb on the PS3, even with a cable.

Am I doing something wrong? Do you think I need to return the PS3? Or does the Superhub not 'play nice' with the PS3?

I'm at a compete loss - any help really appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

That whole DNS thing scares me. What's that all about?

I did try connecting the PS3 with the same ethernet cable my PC uses. I got 12mb download using broadband speed checker and PS3's own speed test. My PC gets 100Mb with the same connection / cable.

That's interesting, but also disappointing, about PSN. If it's gonna be this slow, it really puts me off PS3. I use it for netflix quite heavily too so it's important that the connection is fast enough, but also reliable. And wireless is a must in my case really without loads of messing with a cable.

I hope I can find a solution. I'm gonna try calling Virgin tonight to make sure there are no ISP problems.

Netflix will probably be fine as it isn't hosted by Sony on PSN.

DNS servers resolve domain names (ie playstation.com) to an IP address, ie

dmac~ main$ nslookup playstation.com
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: playstation.com
Address: 117.104.134.11

OpenDNS is a reputable service provider (Google also provide some free to use ones too) and will be what your playstation uses to resolve those domain names to IP addresses. If you don't specify your default DNS servers will be located at your ISP and some people have problems with them, so they switch to someone else's, it can solve their problems, sometimes It does not though.

I'm very surprised nobody has even suggested this which is in fact the problem.

PS3's hardware is limiting but not the issue here.

PC shows 40meg + great

Mac shows 40meg + great

PS3 shows 12ishmb + ok

by default signing into PSN or using any PSN service i.e gaming online, PSN Store downloads including their film rentals. (I can't vouch for NEtflix lovefilm etc) you will automatically limited to around 12-14mb download speeds. It's PSN's fair play usage. No matter if you pay for 100mb speed or 20mb speed you will be capped at a speed of 14mb or slightly less.

Run a speed/ internet test on your XMB.The idea is the eventually everyone in the world will have a speed higher than 10mb this at the current time is more than enough to play games  online with a low-ish ping and have a good online experience. And it's low enough for the people with still only at 5mb connections like BT broadband and SKY etc to play catch up. thus making the difference similar.

Obviously certain games have certain protocols with ports and who has priority due to conenction strengths etc.

But unless you bridge, or you use open DNS from your PC to PS3 download speed won't increase past 12-14mb capped speed. And this will only work PSN store downloads. Gaming is excluded.

Your equipment is not at fault. Just the way PSN is set up for 'fair-play' usage.

One of the best ways is to use homeplugs like someone suggested before with your ps3 and make do with it. Open up PSN ports via your router or put your PS3 in DMZ (Default server) to allow all incoming connections via PS3. - make sure your PS3 has a static IP address also.

That's all you can do.

Can you point me to where Sony state this 12-14 cap limit on the PSN?

i wouldn't use http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

my router syncs at 20mb but i'm only getting 12mb there on my ps3

i'd try these 3:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

http://www.ookla.com/speedtest.php

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bw.asp

i always delete history, search history & cache prior visiting the site & get 17mb every time, which is about right for 20mb sync

So you can get 17Mb on your PS3 through other speedtest sites but the http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk gives you 12Mb?

That is what the OP is getting on a wired PS3.

Perhaps the OP should try the other sites you mention on a wired PS3 to see what he gets.

How can you get 17Mb IF what the other users says is true that there is a 12/14Mb cap?

because there isn't a cap, otherwise people upgrading from adsl to 40mb fibre wouldn't report that downloads now take 1/4 the time they used to.

yep but only at those 3 sites.

it's because of the browser.

prior to the update it had a while back, different sites worked fine & were both accurate & conistent.

now it's just those 3 (that i've found so far & believe me, i've looked)

i'm on sky adsl2+. i can't say how well they'll work with a different isp or cable/fibre connection though.

Below is a Signature

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Would putting the ps3 into DMZ help?

I'm also with VM superhub, no speed problems on PSN here.

What he said /\ putting ps3 into DMZ opens ps3 network up to accept all connection from the router. This will make a big difference with download speed. Also Get rid of the superhub if you stick with wifi, turn it into a modem only and buy a better router.

i get full speed on the ps3 and the pc.

I have the latest version of the hub (there are 2 versions and one doesn't support more than 50mb).

There is no limit on the psn, these people don't know what they are talking about (ignore them, useless).

Just double check which hub you have, ask virgin to send you a new one.

Try and go wired if you can - it's just better and more stable all round.

Wireless is cool etc, but there are many interference factors.

I was specifically talking about somone who mentioned psn is limited, i don't think anyone is denying virgin traffic manage based on how much you download and what time of day it is.

Which ever way, it will never be managed to the appauling speeds he is getting right now.

Wind your neck in.

Neck is wound in.. and I wasn't referring to traffic shaping in that respect. I was referring to port shaping that Virgin carry out 24/7 due to contention issues in their over crowed junction boxes.

This shows to the OP that it's not the PS3 or PSN at fault or we would all be capped at low speeds lol. Maybe setting his network up from the beginning could help. He might have some conflicts? Who knows.

Opinions are a great thing....

I'd agree with you if it wasn't for the fact they have the worst traffic management policy known to man.

Indeed they are.

Traffic management doesn't affect me at the moment.

Maybe once it does my opinion of them will change.
