Do this:

Go to Start > Right click "Computer" and click "Manage"
Click "Disk Management"
Find the HDD you want to format then Right click > Format

See if it lets you choose FAT32 by doing it this way. Hope this helps ;)

I also recommend using Swiss Knife i tried to format a new Western Digital Passport External HDD on Windows XP in DOS and didn't work. Swiss Knife worked though :D wheeeY!

It's annoying that both Xbox360 & PS3 only read FAT32 external drives with 4GB file size limit :/

Can anyone please give a straight answer on how to format to FAT32.

I've tried this: http://download.cnet.com/E aseus-Partition-Master-Hom e-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html but upon clicking 'apply', the message 'One or more of the operations you made require rebooting to complete. If you press 'yes', the computer will reboot to perform the operations.'

I don't like the sound of that. Why would the pc need to reboot to format an external drive?

Also, I can't try swissknife as the site is down.

Download this http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

It's much easier to use than swissknife and works on Windows 7 and Vista

Just to add to this, Paragon Software (a well respected maker of backup and partitioning software) have recently made limited free versions of their stuff available online - their Partition Manager will format to FAT32 (any size) and is supported on all operating systems including 64 bit Vista and Windows 7.

http://www.paragon-software.com/free/

The backup software (which includes a bootable recovery CD), partition manager and bootable rescue disk are all really useful. (For example, you can connect a USB hard disk to a machine that won't boot, start the rescue disk and then copy files from the broken machine!)

Lastly Mac owners  - they are giving away their NTFS software free today and tomorrow, which will let your Mac read and write to Windows disks. Very useful if you have Windows installed as well.

No, dude. Sorry. exFAT is not compatible with PS3 because of the file size limit. There is a really good explanation of exFAT and FAT32 with upsides/downsides to the difference here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

The bad part is that exFAT is what most, if not all, computers are using for storage (regarding HDD anyway) and USB storage devices, DVD players, Network Media devices, PS3 are still a few years behind the curve. This is a huge problem because of the file size limit, with no end in site until everyone gets back on the same page. Until then, the only thing you can do is reformat to FAT32 and suffer the problems with breaking files, movies, etc. up into "digestable" pieces.

I have a portable 250GB HDD that only uses power from a USB to mini USB lead (PS3 pad cable).

It was formatted as NTFS previously and was invisible to a PS3.

I have formatted it to FAT32 using a free program called 2Tware Fat32Format 1.12 downloaded from http://www.2tware.com/product/8/2tware+fat32format

It installed in under 2 mins and formatted my portable HDD in seconds without any problems.

I put a movie on it and connected it to the PS3 via the front USB ports and was able to select the USB HDD via the Video menu and played the movie.  Perfect!

I hope this information is useful :)

After wasting (literally) hours trying to do it through dos, I downloaded this and it was formatted in under a minute.
