Is it worth buying a FAT PS3?

I currently have a slim 160gb ps3 but always preferred the look of the original ps3 console. The disc access noise of my slim plus whining fan noise really irritates me to the point where I wish I had my old 80GB Fat console again.

If I go down the route of re-buying an order console I am potentially looking at something that was made around 2008/ early 09 in terms of age and hardware which may or may not come with problems of its own. (YLOD ect etc)

so is it worth the risk ? - espcially given the fact they can cost as much pre-owned as new slims currently do

also does anyone have a Fat 160gb machine? What were the noise levels from the fans like in that model?

I've never been a fan of going back in time, especially if its the current generation. As for the phats I personally wouldn't bother. Ticking time bombs spring to mind especially the 60GBs.

But if you have the money to throw then by all means do what you think is right :)

You want a 'fat' PS3 just because it looks better than the slim?

Yes, I much prefer the overall appearance of the fat. All my other items on the TV stand are glossy, yet I have a nasty matte slim which if I can I'll replace.

My old 80 GB was almost silent, I never had any problem with fan noise, and certainly didn't have the very blu ray drive that my slim seems to have. Overall the fat was/is a much better product in my opinion,

Thank god it's only your opinion... Bad apples spring to mind when thinking of PS3 fats, Slims are more economic, more durable and look good with the current PS3 games. Seriously I would advise against going back simply for a fat PS3 with prosthetic value. There is a reason why Sony rebranded and that's to dust down all the rubbish from the original batch of consoles and have a clean slate.

My 80 gig fats fan is much louder than my slims so I wouldn't rely on your next fatty to be silent. The only silent PS3 I have is my dead 60 gig 2007 model, but I can barely hear my slim at all only the disc drive when loading games.

If you prefer the look and are able to find a reliable unit (i.e. not a post-YLOD-hairdryer-fixed one) go for it. My 60GB is still is use without trouble. It does produce more sound than a slim, but all in all it's not too bad.

I prefer the design of the PHAT but TBH my PHAT sounnds worse than my original Xbox 360.

End of the day as to which looks the best is irellavant as you buy it to look at the TV whilst playing games and not the Ps3.

The Slim is the better choice now

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Whilst the old PS3's are much cheaper, I wouldn't buy one again purely for the reason that if I decided to sell it some time down the line, I would lose so much money on it and I hate selling PS3's for diddly sqaut, because I make sure I look after them.

I loved my old 80GB, it was slightly louder than my current PS3 (160GB Slim) but I didn't notice any difference in speed or the overall quality etc. Very reliable console in my experience. I begrudgingly sold it to CEX  - and I say begrudgingly because a lot of the consoles that are brought into that place are probably nicked.
