My Western digital 1TB internal HDD

30 Replies 2,649 Views Created 18-06-2010

Hiya PS3 crew...

I have formatted my My Western digital 1TB internal HDD to FAT32.

I have modified my large PS3 (not Slim) so that the HDD fits inside my PS3. I get this message when starting my PS3.

cannot start. correct hard disk was not found.

I have put in my original 40gb HDD and the PS3 works fine so my modifications to the HDD slot have not defected my PS3.

Can anyone help me get my 1TB internal HDD boot the PS3 so i can update from my back i have done.

Is the Western Digital 1TB HDD compatible with the PS3?

Forgive me as i am a NOOBSTER!

Note... I have tried the master reset on the console and still get the same message (cannot start. correct hard disk was not found.)

Any HELP is much appreciated :)

Big love

James

What are those Blue Scorpion Drives like?  I was looking at getting one is all, and wanted to know if they are decent drives.

Maybe 1 TB is more than the PS3 firmware can cope with. Have you tried formatting to a smaller size first?

I had this on my first 500gb drive rang sony they advised to reseat the drive, tried and still had it.

Wasn't all the time was like maybe 1 in 5 times I started the PS3 up.

To get rid of the error I would have to turn my PS3 of at the back and back on, then it would boot fine.

In the end got sick of it and bought a different drive and had no probs at all.

If you dont mind Iplayer skipping every 10 seconds, due to the drives head parking issue, they are fine.

Ive had one for a year.

It seems to locate into the SATA slots just fine. I may get some SATA extension leads and connect via them, that would then eliminate your suggestion McNeilio.

Thanks for speedy reply btw :)

Defo a jumper and speed issue.

The HDD is too fast for the PS3 bootup.

Here's your jumper settings:

I have been stuffing around with my 1TB WD for weeks. I'm so glad to finally find someone else having the exact same issues. I too have modded my console to accept the TB so am very keen to get it to work. I am just wondering how to bridge the pins as sugested by Danlisas. and i trust you did get it fully working as there was no final post saying so. Please help

..there are a few other threads about this on the forum. But..

1. The drive has to physically be 9.5mm high/thick, or else it won't fit in the dock inside the ps3.

(Has nothing to do with the hdd space, the speed of the drive, etc. It's the physical dimensions. You can use a drive, and stick an ide-cable and a jumper into the dock manually, and connect the thing to an external power supply - but why you would do that I've no idea. And while it's true that there are no 1TB drives currently on the market in 9.5mm, there are several models planned that comes in both 12.5 and 9.5mm. There's absolutely no point in buying any of the new drives, though, since the ps3 supports SATA 1/150Mb/s transfer rates. So a 500Mb drive from a year back, such as in the Spinpoint series, is a good choice. A SATA1 drive with low heat and noise, that kind of thing. The WD Scorpio drives cost twice as much and have worse performance in practice. Obviously, more expensive and more noise means more bragging rights, so that doesn't matter, it seems).

2. Don't use a jumper-setting if you insert the drive in the ps3 dock. In fact, remove the jumper if there's one there. There's a "mode select" option that's standard on every drive made since 2001 or so now, and there's no need to mess with it if you want to use the drive in the ps3.

3. There's no real limit on the space for the ps3 drive. The file-system is based on a ext-variant, and has no logical limitation, only parameters that will make a trade-off on the addressing overhead.

Hi Fleinn

Thanks for your reply.

I know it should only take 9.5mm thick but im stuborn or stupid? so i have modified it to accept the 12.5mm. It now just slides in like the 9.5mm

You say that i should not use the jumpers and i should use the mode select option. Not being much of a tecky i dont know how to access the mode select option. could you please explain

:D Really? Awesome. How did you do that?

The mode-select is just no jumper setting. Sorry, wasn't very clear. ..also, a bit wrong - it's called CS, cable select. ..and the jumper is actually set on one of the cable-pairs on the ide-port.

CS is only available on ide drives NOT SATA which the ps3 supports internally. Weel done on modding your ps3 to accept a 3.5" drive, any piccs to show how you did it?

Whoops. Yeah, that's how it was. One drive on each channel, bios decides the order of the partitions, and so on. So no jumpers.. *cough*

@ Simy

Its still a 2.5, its 12.5mm instead of 9.5mm though(Height)

WD Blue 12.5

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=685

WD Black 9.5 (Standard size)

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=854

Both are 2.5 not 3.5!
