WARNING! Sony doesn't recommend this as there's a risk it will break your PS3! It's a test they do when you send it in for a replacement I think.

The 40GB fan test is perfectly safe - its built into the system, why put Sony have done that if it wasn't safe? The 60 GB don't risk it - you have to turn it upside down to over heat the system.

...And why do you know that Turing the PS3 upside down will over heat the system. but i agree why would Sony put something that would harm the system

Because you're blocking the hot air from escaping which heats up the system and makes the fans spin faster.

Switch off console on front, so red lights appear. Place your finger on eject button (keep it held on), switch it off at the bak with your finger still on eject button, then switch it bak on.

I tried the fan test ages ago, it was because of the amount of dust I could see through the cooling vents, also the fan developed a loud whirring noise. I was told it spins out dust from the fan bearings which is a known cause of loud fan noises, My model is the 40GB which I've owned from new about four years ago. Anyway I tried it and it worked perfectly, not only did it remove all the visible dust from inside the machine, it fixed the loud fan noise. Ohh! I nearly forgot, I tried it on my mates 120GB slim and it worked just fine, the only difference been that there is no off switch at the back so you must use the plug socket switch in place of the power off switch.

P.S I'm not claiming that it's safe to do, just that I had no issues with it on a 40GB or a 120GB PS3!!!
