Will my TV work?

14 Replies 311 Views Created 15-05-2006
I have a Toshiba HDTV but it doesnt have a HDMI connection, could anybody tell me if I could use this HDMI female to DVI-D male adaptor to connect the PS3 to my TV? Or does anybody know if the PS3 may have different cables available like the 360 that had VGA (my TV only accepts HD signals through DVI-D and VGA as it's really just a big PC monitor, 27").

I hope so! Im in the same situation. I've got a Marantz HDTV with a female DVI-D connection at the back. So if anyone does know how this is going to work with a PS3 I'd be grateful!

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes - the PS3 should work from anything from a non-HDTV up to those that support 1080p.

If there isn't an HDMI to DVI-D cable in the PS3 box then you should be able to buy one and use that. i am also the same - Philips HD TV with DVI-D HDCP.

You don't have to use HDMI, there's also SCART and Component.

Yeah, but for the cleanest signal - if using the 60GB version - I would have thought HDMI to DVI-D would be the best option as there is no digital to analogue conversion going on. Yes?

I've heard you won't be able to tell the difference between HDMI and Component unless your playing on a screen 42"+

Remember that if your using dvi, you wont get any audio. You will have to use a seperate connection to get audio, the only way to do this will be to use the optical out to a dolby digital amp.

The PS3 also seems to have an AV multi-out socket though as well as HDMI, so I would expect that Sony will include a multi cable adapter of some sort to get audio out if you dont have anything to plug Optical in to.

I dont have HDMI on my new set so im gonner use component. In theory this is still better than HDMI and most people do agree. but.. problems this could cause for us though is if the big movie companys stop us playing full HD movies on blueray discs.. on component it will be down scaled to stop piracy... and that will suck for us. though if you use HDMI there is no downscailing as you cant pirate digital single.. yet? the above is worrying for me as i plan to use my ps3 for playing BD movies but for games component will be full res and apparently the best quality! link:http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=331&products_id=7245& so we will hopefully be able to pick these up with our consoles :) edit : btw about your dvi question incase you dont know when you convert HDMI to DVI you loose audio (will need to use the optical out to a hifi or something) and also you will need a tv set with HDCP (content protection scheme) to get any video signal hope this helps!
