Will the PS4 support 4K

[ Edited ]
26 Replies 2,771 Views edited 10-11-2012

I am looking forward to the PS4.

I also hope Sony dont over react the other way to the lessons learned from the PS3.

Just make it advanced tech AND easy for developers to code to..

I want 4k and 10year lifecycle.

That's some serious screen Rez, but I really be surprised if the ps4 had the man
Power to push that many pixels on screen, while maintaining a solid frame rate etc.. But if it can... Boy won't games look stunning

Not a chance the the PS4 will do games in 4K if you want any sort of visual quality.

Most of the newssites did report on some rumours back in August. Rumours about the PS4 supporting 4K, and fitting into the plans from Sony, on pushing/backing 4K to their consumers. So, it seems likely, just a matter of how they will do this. It could "just" be video playback, or upscaled video output with 4K resolution.

Going with experience, they really made a lot of noise about 1080p resolution, before the release of PlayStation 3. But it's not like we have a huge variety of native 1080p games...

indeed

They need to keep the cost lower than the Ps3 at launch as they lost a lot of early hopefulls to the 360 and they don't want to do the same again next time round

4k is it realy needed? I wouldn't think so.

As for 10 years life cycle that what they expect of the Ps3 and the PS2 got that be it only little support the PS1 got 7/8 years support.

10 years for the PS3  so PS4 should get 10 years no problems.

Below is a Signature

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

I don't see next gen systems to support Ultra HD or 4K res as standard. First it requires huge amount of processing, memory (video and main RAM)  and will require a lot more storage space. All reports so far (not official) states that Sony are heading to PC architecture with PS4. So we would see that both PS4 and the next Xbox to be similar systems. No more bad port games.

The PS3 is already technically capable of basic 4K content as it has HDMI 1.3 (+ psuedo HDMI 1.4 support); it just doesn't have the software support for 4K video files and as for games there isn't enough sheer power and internal bandwidth to do anything complex.

I do believe there is some sort of photo/magazine software available on Japanese PS3s however which is capable of 4K output.

Also, to be a pedant, the terminology for these resolutions seem to have been a bit skewed:

What we're refering to as 4K in home media is actually Quad-HD...

2K  =  2048*1080p  (with a degree of variation on the vertical resolution)

4K  =  4096*2160p  (with a degree of variation on the vertical resolution)

HD  =  1280*720p

Full-HD  =  1920*1080p

Quad-HD  =  3840*2160p  (4x the resolution of 1080p)

Ultra-HD  =  7680*4320p  (16x the resolution of 1080p)

However, I can see that marketing 3840x2160p as "4K" or "Ultra-HD" is going to be a lot easier than "Quad-HD".

The PS4 imo will almost definitely be 4K capable, but it will likely only do 4K menus and 4K video files. Down the line I can see it being updated for an advanced blu-ray format and VOD in 4K, I also wouldn't be surprised if it can upscale existing 1080p blu-rays to 2160p.

As for games, while there might be the odd piece of demo scene material, I doubt they will go beyond 1080p, as graphics quality is more important; especially at that resolution.

Everything you see is restored with beautiful, natural detail, richer color and stunning contrast. The latest Reality Creation database and Super Resolution processing breathes new life into everything you see with phenomenal 4K Ultra HD (3,820 x 2,160) resolution.

Gotta love marketing :)   thats from sony's blurb on their 4k beast

That's pushing it, but IMAX 15/70 Film has an effective resolution equal to around 16,000*11,000..

I would say that we won't see 4K on consoles for a long time...

As mentioned above, it's dubious if the rumoured Hardware will support 1080p and 60fps let alone 4K

This is my biggest problem with many companies, "Super Resolution processing" & "Reality Creation database"; does every single little thing have to be branded?! They mean nothing.

It's merely higher resolution (which will naturally have a subsequent effect on the vibrancy and brightness of the image).

I've got no issue with "4K Ultra-HD"; it's a punchy term which works, it's gonna be easier to market that way; but all that other junk is just noise, which'll probably end up confusing luddites and putting them off.

I think things can be over-branded sometimes.

PS4 will struggle for 1080p60 with the rumoured hardware it's got.

because next gen gaming isnt about graphics.

its all about the growing connection with social media and app culture.  take a look at the xmb now to what it was and you can see where the direction is heading.  take a look at the vitas "feature" list and you see its more about social connectivity and app than added value for gaming or making it a media powerhouse.

add a large helping of digital gaming via the psn or streaming and you have next gen
