i have recently bought an lg flatron w2243s monitor and cannot connect it to my PS. the monitor i have bought has only got a VGA input and no DVI inputs. would i be able to use a HDMI to VGA cable such as this one http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=139402. if not are there any other ways to connect this monitor to my PS.
That cable will not work. It's because that cable does not have a digital to analogue converter. You need to get one that use the multi-AV output from PS3, not HDMI port. That cable will transfer picture from component to VGA. The picture depends on the quality of the cable and your monitor. To get sound you also may need to get a 3.5mm jack adapter.http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=3.5mm+jack+adap
thanks for your help. would this work http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDMI-Gold-Cable-v1-3-Video
None of the stuff suggested so far will work - the HDMI to VGA lead doesn't appear to convert the signal, and the HDMI-DVI lead is not suitable for you as you don't have a DVI port. (And even if you did, it would need to be an HDCP enabled DVI port, where HDCP is a type of copy protection used by PS3).
You could use a solution that converts HDMI to VGA (these are expensive though, the one below is £70) and I'm not sure about the reliability of the website...
... or you could convert the component output from the AV multi out socket. There are cables on ebay that do this for about £30, not sure which sellers are reliable though! Quality will not be as great as the HDMI option.
Alternatively, if it's possible to return the monitor that you have, the following one can be had for £146 (yours is £120 at Tesco, so this would be another £26). It's 1080p with HDMI input, 5 star reviews on a decent online store. This is the best solution, I've ordered lots of stuff from Overclockers in the past.
final question will this work.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Playstation-Nintendo-Monit
I bought that cable and personally would not recommend it. For me it never worked. I have a digimate 23inch monitor without HDCP so could not connect HDMI to DVI so thought this would work. I got a black and white image and when setting it up to be colour I got a fuzzy image and the screen went black. It was a pain to set up as well.
Mines now left in the packaging dumped out the way. For me it was a complete waste of money, but if it does work you supposedly get 720p on your monitor (as long as it can handle it)
