I disagree on this. I doubt either console could pull that off for now. Hell even Killzone 2 which looks better than Gears2 can only handle 16 v 16. I don't think this is necessarily a failing of the consoles themselves, more a failing of the general internet speeds and the speed/volume of information required to run games of that fidelity. Perhaps on a closed LAN it would be possible but certainly not online. Even (IMO) Resistance2 takes a grapichal drop when going between online and offline ... and Resistance2 isn't exactly the best looking game around.

If what you state was the case why stop at 30 v 30? Hell lets pull a MAG and go 128 v 128. What's the first thing everyone said when they heard that (including myself)? It's probably going to be a lagfest. If they could pull off large scale games like that then large scale games would be the norm however currently both consoles are limited by factors outside their control.


Im confused maybe i said it wrong or you read it wrong i was stating that neither the ps3 or 360 could make a game and keep the graphics of an Uncharted/Gears in a 30 vs 30 online game without performance issues of course they could lower the graphics etc, but then that would defy my point. :D

By the sounds of it, WipEout HD does run in 1080p mostly, but will drop the resolution to keep the framerate at a solid 60fps which i think is more important in a game like WipEout.

Oh and when we all first started playing the KZ2 online beta we didn't think they had downgraded the graphics at all because they simply look amazing, but looking at all the single player videos they actually have downgraded the graphics.

"They're not 1080p in the sense that the resolution is no longer 1920x1080. WipEout HD is now rendering at 1280x1080 (with some screen tear to boot), which I'm fairly sure is the game's lowest resolution - but still a 50% resolution increase over 720p. So what's happening? Basically WipEout HD is the first game I've come across that seems to be operating with a dynamic framebuffer. Resolution can alter on a frame-by-frame basis. Rather than introduce dropped frames, slow down or other unsavoury effects, the number of pixels being rendered drops and the PS3's horizontal hardware scaler is invoked to make up the difference!"

That's amazing & quite clever actually.
If they can turn the 'hardware picture scaling' on & off, on a 'per frame basis' on a particular axis, whenever needed, then this means that future games / developers may be able to utilise the same process / effect.

This is quite exciting & something I didn't know was possible with the PS3.
Does anyone know of any other future titles that are planning on using this technique ?

It seems a brilliant 'work around' :)

this is ingame screenshot... and not a video, all the ingame videos are ingame maps with animations and voices, you should try making a movie like that too its quite fun^^

Really? Because EPIC have said Gears 2 is running the most updated version of the engine and it has been updated since UT3. I think i'll believe EPIC - the developers of the unreal engine, unreal tournament AND gears of war over you.
