HDMI with ethernet?

3 Replies 7,853 Views Created 19-05-2013

Anyone read/heard anything about whether the PS4 will support HDMI with an ethernet channel?

Lives of great men all remind us we may make our lives sublime and so departing leave behind us footprints in the sands of time.

hadn't heard of the idea before and just googled it.  Interesting, I take it you have a Smart TV connected to your network and want the PS4 to run it's networking through the TV so you only have one cable coming out the back of the console?

Looking at this conversation here...

It looks to me as if the PS4 should support it as it would be an integral part of the HDMI standard for supporting 4k video, which we already know the PS4 is going to support.

Currently I have a port on my router which is wired to an ethernet switch at the back of the furniture where all my media-devices are. The switch is connected to my TV, my PS3 and my htpc.

I'd like to get rid of that switch + all the ethernet cables, if possible. (My receiver is an HDMI switch, and it's the logical device to also act as an ethernet switch). I don't like using WiFi, and - paradoxically - I don't like cables either. So the compromise is to have as few cables as possible. Ethernet over HDMI would allow me to get rid of one switch, plus a few ethernet cables. Less mess = More joy. (For me, at least).

Unfortunately, I would need to replace all my current devices, but I'm looking at it as a long-term migration -- but if I couldn't go all the way, I wouldn't bother getting a new receiver, hence the question if PS4 will support it.

Minor note, in case it's relevant to anyone: I believe the "ethernet over HDMI" was specified to be limited to 100mbit/s. Not sure if it's true any more, but I mention it in case it matters to anyone.
