8GB GDDR5 unified, it's for the whole system, so the whole system has 8GB, unless you want to get into the nitty gritty of the system we are probably talking a few MB's more than 8GB.

@TRS-T

Nobody knows how much storage the PS4 will come with yet, I have a feeling SCE will announce a few different bundles, perhaps one for 250, 500 or even 1TB.

8GB GDDR5 UMA

..or 8192MB of Graphics Double Data Rate Version 5 SDRAM in a Unified Memory Architecture.

This is a large amount of RAM, incredibly fast and it's one single pool so developers can choose how much of it they use for each part of the system, they can divide it up how they wish.

Originally 512MB was said to be reserved for the Operating System; but I can see it being 1GB now, so there will likely be around 7GB available for games.

This ram will likely run at about 5.5GHz, DDR3 usually runs in the 1.3-1.8GHz range but is available as high as 2.8GHz.

The key here is that the CPU, GPU & RAM are all tightly packed on a single chip called an APU; and the CPU & GPU can share a bandwidth of 176GB/s when accessing the RAM, this means it will be incredibly efficient and data won't have to be thrown back and forth and passed through various connections.

The only downside to GDDR5 is it has a poorer latency which isn't well suited to CPU tasks, GDDR5 is High Speed, High Latency while DDR3 is Moderate Speed, Low Latency.

CPUs, particularly of the variety in the PS4 generally handle more random tasks, ones that can branch off in different directions according to various circumstances and this is better with lower latencies, whereas the GPU handles tasks that are straightforward and parralel; and can handle poorer latencies. This is the trade off of more speed in GDDR5.

But this problem is pretty much outweighed by the sheer bandwidth, flexibility and overall advantage the system's configuration as a whole provides. Also, there is a push towards a tyhing called GPGPU functionality, which offloads a lot of CPU-like tasks to the GPU; this will likely further aleviate this issue in some respects.

By comparison, the PS3 had one pool of 256MB XDR RAM @ 3.2GHz for the CPU Only and 256MB GDDR3 RAM @ 0.7GHz for the GPU Only. Also, after reserves for the OS, this respectively left about 200MB & 240MB for games which is incredible and proves how efficient consoles are, just to think Killzone 2/3 & Uncharted 2/3 were running on 440MB or ram split two ways.

EDIT: if you mean storage as in hard disk drive, I'm guessing around 320GB & 640GB for a standard and premium SKUs respectively, possibly 500GB & 750GB.

I can't see them doing 1TB just yet as the cost may be better spent on making sure the primary specs are exactly where they need to be.

They can bump up the HDDs down the line and we'll likely have the option to put our own in if needed.

This gen for example we've had..

@mitch:
"The key here is that the CPU, GPU & RAM are all tightly packed on a single chip called an APU;"

Do you have a link that goes into that detail? It's very unusual, but not impossible, for system or graphics RAM to be incorporated into an APU. I'd expect the RAM to be separate, soldered to the motherboard, connected to the APU by a super-fast system bus. Such SoC designs are more common with mobile processors.

Edit: On most CPU's L3 cache takes up over half the die. In an APU like this one we might see the heady heights of 32mb cache. 8Gb on die would make for one very, very large chip!

Also the OP is almost certainly asking for the unknown hard drive size ;)

@tmcd35, you beat me too it. I was a little shocked to read that the 8gb of RAM was going to be on the same die as the APU. I've looked around for links or info confirming his but can't find any. Like you I'd assumed the RAM would be separate. If it is on the APU then that's going to be one monsterously large and difficult chip to manufacture.

As to the question the OP asked, nobody knows what the storage options on the PS4 will look like. I currently have a 500gb HDD in my PS3 and if I'm honest it's not really been big enough. I've deleted alot of DLC and game installs as well, but even so, given the amount of games and stuff I own it's really startig to show its limitations now. I'd have thought therefore a 320gb HDD would be the bare minimum you'd want to se, with 500gb being more likely what I'd want to see as a bare minimum. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a 1TB HDD option, but I'm really not sure we'll get storage options anywhere near that high because of cost. Hopefully we'll know more after E3, but until then you're only going to get guess work off of people. What I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for though is that you'll  be able to swap HDD's out of the system yourself like you could with the PS3.

I guess though we're all assuming they'll be going with 2.5" SATA drives when if the APU and other gubbins is small enough they might be able to plump for a 3.5" drive. That'd give them access to higher capacities at more reasonable prices I guess.

Must admit I'd assume 2.5" for some reason.  Even at this size 1Tb isn't beyond the realms of cost - about £55-65 retail, so Sony could purchase bulk for at least half that I would have thought.  That said, given current consoles, I'd be surprised at more than 640Gb initially.

What I'd like to see is a SSD hybrid.   32Gb SSD and 500Gb HDD.

Yeah, depends where you look and for which manufacturer you go for. The Samsung HDD's seem really reasonably priced. Honestly I've said for a little while now that I'd love to see a console go with a small SSD drive as you say, with a standard HDD for storage. Use the SSD to save game data too. Actually given the download and start playing aspect of the console and there desire to stream games an SSD drive, as you say, of about 32gb wouldn't be a bad bet. I'd be happy with a 32gb SSD and a 500gb HDD combo. I'd also love to see a console that ran its entire OS in dedicated hardware aware from the unified memory pool and CPU. Give that functionality over to a small chunk of dedicated RAM and a specific CPU for handling all of that functionality separately. Not going to happen though.

What I think would be really cool is an Apple Fusion drive, but since that's propriety stuff...

I'm thinking 32Gb SSD for streaming, OS, game saves, etc and 500Gb for games storage.  As for dedicated OS processor?  I think the PS4 will have it!

My money is an ARM chip on the same die as the APU (AMD have already been experimenting with this).  Sony have already said there is a mysterious second processor for use with Gaikai and Video compression.

The other option is 1 of the 8 cores is reserved for OS.  Add to that 1Gb of the 8Gb reservered for the OS and you have a little segregated always running OS VM.

The WiiU has 2GB ram, and comes with 8GB & 32GB storage versions.

The PS4 has 8GB ram, and we don't know what storage versions.

Ram is completely different to storage :) It will have more than 8GB storage, believe me!

The PS3 has around .5GB of Ram, but you can buy models with over 300GB of storage :p
