PlayStation 4 Rumours and Speculation Thread

So the rumours and speculation for the next core PlayStation are spouting up all over the internet and for those of you that were around for the hype for the PlayStation 3, you'll probably remember what it was like so I have created this little home to keep everything in one place!

Also remember that some of the rumours need to be taken with a rather large lump of salt!

Of course, we (the Community Team) cannot comment on any rumours and speculation that is posted

Over to you!

The fact that a Moderator has created this thread, says a lot. Sony are announcing something NEW in the summer according to various sources, IGN and BBC being 2 of them. Whether it's the next generation of PlayStation, I don't know. I would love it, if it would be backwards compatible and for Sony to invest more into timed exclusives for 3rd party games.

However I'm not going to get all hyped up over this, not after the last Sony unveiling, where they talked so much about how the PS3 was going to have so much hardware built in, but when it came to releasing the product, it had far too much stuff taken out of it, that it just seemed like a PS2.5, so I hope this time around that the PS4 would have what Andrew House say's it has in his fourthcoming speech come release date.

Please  don't read too much into this, I know how untidy the forums can become when various rumours hit the internet.

I just want to keep everything in one place :)

would love to know if the next playstation console will be ditching the playstation plus and free online and going into something like the xbox has

hope they still alow pre owned games to be played as if not this could effect playstation in future and less people paying money on developers

would also love for sony to annouce first party games upon release like socom

sony needs to do a open racing platform like we see on the tdu2 game

would love sony / playstation to instroduce a casino type game were its moderated

Part of the appeal of PlayStation is the free online gaming, so making subscriptions mandatory would be a terrible decision.

True, depends if Sony get the feel for the need of cash to boost profits

4gb of ram what the heck are they thinking???... only 1gb for the os and 3 for the games??.. it should have had 8gb. you can put as many teraflops you want in it, but this will be 'cant have xcross chat' thing all over again and sluggish os... 8gb is bare minimum today..

4gb is plenty when it comes to Consoles. They don't have a massive resource hungry OS like Windows running in the background, and when you consider the games that have been running on the current PS3 and Xbox 360, it just shows that memory isn't as important as resource management and efficient programming and development techniques.

The one thing I would hope for, is better management of the Graphics memory and use, and maybe the addition of Edram to help with the display.

After all, I have 4gig in my desktop and a 512mb 9800GT in SLI mode. And once the operating system is up and running, if it doesn't have the Virtual memory running, there isn't much physical memory left due to the resource hogs that are Virus and Spam checkers, adobe readers and all the other gumf that you have running in the background, but the PC is still able to run Crysis pretty well on what is available physically.

So, take out all of the above, and 4 gig of very fast ram should be more than plenty.

My take on too many resources, is that the devs become extremely lazy and do what they have been doing on PC for years, letting the resources do all the work and not efficiently coding for the hardware.

Just look at what Sony's 1st party devs have been doing on the PS3 and you'll realise that is the case, where as the Multi Platform devs have been a lot more lazy, coding for the 360 and doing very poor ports to the PS3, because the 360 was easier to code for.

Don't get me wrong, they have gotten better over the years, but there are still major issues with the 3rd party devs that are still there from the beginning, that aren't showing up in Sony's 1st party games.

If PC's didn't have there resource hungry OS, Apps and sidekicks, gaming on PC's would be extremely efficient and a hell of a lot faster than it is now.

Seeing what happens when Valve release there Steam box, because if that ignores most of the operating system bottlenecks that Windows has, and runs an extremely fast and efficient Linux box, it could make for a very efficient system on a small resource budget.

I've noticed a discrepancy in those stories. 1 says the xbox is a 356 bit system and the other says its a 384 bit system.

It say X720 will have 8gb and PS4 will have 4gb... and RAM is hella important. Lots of devs asking for at least 8gb (Check Crytek, EPIC etc…)

With so much quick access going on between the OS and media, which is obviously going to happen next gen, the more the better.

If PS4 has 4gb and releases in a years time, it’ll roughly have the same amount as the next gen of mobiles and tablets.

A great leap over the PS3 but what about the 10 year cycle this time.

Media features are only going to become more and more power draining.

You don’t want the equivelant of the cross game chat and Skyrim scenerio’s 3 years into the PS4′s life now do you?

There is no need for 8gb even if Devs are asking for it. You can load up Skyrim on PC with ridiculously complex mods and the PC will not get near 4gb even with Windows 7 running.

I heard there will be new controller for PS4, so i decided to post what i want to see in this "upgrade":

1) separate (literally) buttons for sub directions on d-pad.

2) mini touch screen in the midle where programmers can place additional control elements (buttons, movelists, shortcuts etc)

3) have the move technology in it - primarly for shooters. Maybe you will even be able to use this as a "real" gun placing move sensor on the right upper side and holding controller by the left handle with L3/L4 button in real pistol trigger's place. Or as the car wheel - this will require 2 move sensors i guess.

another one,,,

Another piece regarding PS4 and its rumored specs and controller has gone up on Kotaku, which has culled information on Orbis from a 90-page PDF document.

According to the document, 8GB of system memory, 2.2GB of video memory, a 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” CPU – which gives it 8 cores, an AMD R10xx GPU,
a Blue-ray drive, 160GB HDD, and 4x USB 3.0 and 2x Ethernet ports. The audio output is HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels.

The original concept of the Ps3 had more than one Eithernet port as Sony wanted it as a hub but that was later dropped due to cost like the dual HDMI port was also dropped

If I'm not mistaken that's not the total, 1.6Ghz x 8 = 12.8Ghz. Its not likely to go backwards XD

All in all this fighting talk with numbers is meaningless, what is important (and what the two giants should be doing IMO) is selling the games, what exclusives is Sony going to have to make me buy the next PlayStation?

That's what made the PS2 was so successful, not because of its insides.
