Unofficial Playstation 3 Help Guide

232 Replies 51,527 Views Created 24-03-2007
Hey all, I did make another thread on this but i missed out some infomation. So here is a better one. Tell me if i have missed anything and if you are going to ask a question, please make sure you have read this through first.

IP Address you may need to connect your PS3 up to the internet

Having the IP address is vital in getting your PS3 online when it comes around to entering everything manually. To find all of the IP Address on the LAN (Local Area Network) follow these instructions:

Step1: Click on Start
Step2: Click on 'Run'
Step3: A box will come up where you need to type the word 'command' into.
Step4: You will be prompt with a black empty box. Next to the > you will need to type in ‘ipconfig/all’ .This will give you all of the IP address on your computer and the LAN it is connected to. This should look like this:

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6858/commanddi6.jpg

You may have more than that on your IP list but that is the basics.

IP Address: This is inrange of my routers IP Address (Default Gateway). Because it is inrange i am able to browse my routers setting using its IP address.
SubNetMask: This on most computers is default as 255.255.255.0 This doesnt need changing and should be left as default.
Default GateWay: This is my routers IP Address. All IP's that connect to the network need to be inrange of this to connect proberbly.
DNS Servers: These are the internal DNS servers that need to be entered when connecting online. (The DNS servers found on your routers home page are your external ones and will change without you knowing so dont enter these.

I have found my Default Gateway IP but i cannot connect to my routers homepage!

The reason you are unable to connect to your routers home page is because your computer is not assigned an in-range ip address. Follow the instructions below on how to assign your computer or laptop and inrange IP to connect to your routers homepage.

Step1: Start
Step2: Control Panel
Step3: Switch To Classic View (In the top right hand corner)
Step4: Network Connections
Step5: Right Click on Local Area Connections
Step5 (for wireless computers): Right Click on the Wireless Network
Step6: Click on properties
Step7: Click on Internet Protocol
Step8: Properties
Step9: Click on 'Use the following IP address
Step10: Your IP address will need to be inrange of your routers IP, for example

Routers IP: 192.168.2.1
Inrange IP : 192.168.2.2

(You can find your routers IP above)

Step11: Subnetmask is usually 255.255.255.0 (Check on Router Page if unsure)
Step12: Default Gateway is your routers IP address (see above)
Step13: Click on use the following DNS Server Address
Step14: To find your DNS servers look at 'IP Address you may need to connect your PS3 up to the internet' and follow the steps until you come across your DNS servers in the command box.
Step15: Click 'OK' and 'OK' again

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/2910/help1nf0.jpg

Now your computer has a IP address that is inrange of your routers, do this with all Computers/Laptops on your network. . Note The IP Address on the network can not the the same!! This will result in a IP clash!!

My computer has a in-range IP, how do i get onto the router homepage?

Now your computer has an IP address inrange you should be able to acsess its homepage.

Step1: Find your Default Gateway IP address (see IP Address you may need to connect your PS3 up to the internet)
Step2: Open up Internet Explorer and type in the IP address into the address bar.
Step3: You may ave to type in the password to get onto the router's settings. To find these look in the routers manual or CD to find out what they are. The Default ones are normaly:

Username: admin, ADMIN, or (blank)
Password: (Blank), admin, ADMIN

Try all of the combinations, if they dont work see your manual which should tell you the passoword and username.

I need to assign my PS3 a manual IP address, what should it be?

You need to assign your PS3 an IP address that is inrange of your default gateways. See 'IP Address you may need to connect your PS3 up to the internet'. An exmple of an inrange IP is

Routers IP: 192.168.2.1
In range IP: 192.168.2.2

The last digit needs to be in a range of 50 of the routers last digit. (Most routers vary).

If you only have 1 DNS server, set the secondry server as 0.0.0.0

My Router has WEP security, what do I do?

WEP is a type of security that your router may have. If your router does has WEP you will need to go onto your routers homepage (see above) to find out the WEP key that the PS3 will need to connect to the router.

I Can connect to the router, i just cannot get my PS3 to connect to the internet

This is a common problem that i am confused about, although something you may want to try is to open the ports for Playstation Network Gaming. To do this you will need to get onto your routers homepage (see above). Once you are on the homepage you will need to look for a link to 'Virtual Servers' or 'Port Forwarding' which Shoulf be under firewall Once you have found the link you will need to open the folloing Ports:

TCP 80
TCP 443
TCP 5223
UDP 3478
UDP 3479
UDP 3658

For example, this is on my router page with the ports about to be saved:

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/239/routeryn3.jpg

N.B That the Server IP Address that the ports are going to be saved to is your PS3's IP address.

Assigning a DMZ to your PS3

Please note that this is a last resort for getting your PS3 Online. It By-Passes all security on the router. However I have used this to get Communictation and to be able to create a game online for my PS2 and everything has worked fine since.

To assign a DMZ for your PS3 follow these instructions:

Step1: Get onto your routers homepage (see above)
Step2: Click on the DMZ link on the homepage, may also be called demilitarized zone.
Step3: There should be a box with 'Static IP' with your external IP address in that can be found here. This will change from time to time so if you enter the static IP manualy you need to keep updating it.
Step4: Now you will have to enter a Private IP address. This needs to be the same as what you assigned your PS3's IP as (make sure its inrange of your routers!).
Step5: Make sure it saves, now your PS3 has an DMZ assigned so it can bypass the security.

This is an example of my PS2 with an assinged DMZ:

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6954/dmzhi0.jpg

------------------------------------------------

I think thats all now, if im missing anything please tell me. However for now my hands are huring so I will finish it there.

Best of Luck, Alias :gr8:

Right, ok...

Your Computers IP is 82.39.90.251
Your routers is 81.39.88.1

This means that your computers Ip is out of range of your modems. Therefore you cant get onto the modems home page.

To solve this you need to chnage the computers IP address so it is inrange of your modems, thus so you can view the modems homepage......

To do that follow:

Step1: Start
Step2: Control Panel
Step3: Switch To Classic View (In the top left hand corner)
Step4: Network Connections
Step5: Right Click on Local Area Connections
Step5 (for wireless computers): Right Click on the Wireless Network
Step6: Click on properties
Step7: Click on Internet Protocol
Step8: Properties
Step9: Click on 'Use the following IP address
Step10: Your IP address will need to be inrange of your routers IP, so:

Your Modems IP: 81.39.88.1
Inrange IP : 81.39.88.2

Hi, just to say that where you need to open up ports may be under the heading of "NAT Setup" or something similar depending on the router, also enable UPnP on the router.

This sounds to me like the router isn't yours yes ? Are you connecting to a shared router in a college dorm or school building or something ? I have a netgear router and the port forwarding comes under the title "applications and gaming"

If your router (or gateway) IP is 81.39.88.1
and your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
You can use the IP's 81.39.88.2 right through to 81.39.88.254
So.. Set either your computer or your PS3 to a different IP, try 81.39.88.3 or 81.39.88.4

By the way Alias, are you using your PS3 as a web server ? You have port 80 and 443 forwarded to your Playstation which are both internet ports, your playstation should not be accepting requests on these ports and doesn't need to be configured for outgoing...

Hi, can you help me out here? Not quite sure what to do...

Here's what I get on the config screen after I go into 'run' and 'command'

Windows IP Configuration

Host name: ****
Primary DNS Suffix :
Node Type: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled : Yes

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State : Media Disconnected
Description : SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address : 00-16-36-40-34-88

Ethernet Adapter Wireless Connection:

Media State: Media Disconnected
Description : Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter
Physical Address : 00-16-CE-8D-B9-7C

PPP adapter Tiscali Broadband :

Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
Description : WAN Interface
Physical Address : 00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled : No
IP Address : 80.47.124.95
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 80.47.124.95
DNS Servers : 212.139.132.4
212. 139.132.5

Now I think I've got two ideas of how to set up the PS3 online...

A) Connect the wired internet at my house to my laptop, and connect the PS3's ethernet cable to it, and make adjustments. I've set up the wires and all, but do I need to change the settings on the PS3 itself to accomodate for this?

B) Set up a wireless server from my laptop and use the wi-fi on the PS3 from there. Not sure if this is possible, if it is, how do I do it?

Any help will be appreciated!

However you set this up, unless you are actually serving http (80) or https (443) you do not need to open ports, you'd set it up like this if people in the outside world send requests to see internet pages that are served from your network, not to mention the URL reg, DNS and all the other stuff that comes along with serving web sites.
