Thats a bit harsh, how are they any less flimsy than a dvd or blu ray? And i dont see that much difference in load times between a umd and a game on the memory card.

Though yeah times do move on, games on a memory stick is probably a good way to go

Flash memory is so much faster than UMD's it's not even debatable.

The UMDs inside the cases were fine, but the stupid plastic cases around them were horrible.

Re: The Next Generation Portable Entertainment Device...

Why is it that people are still moaning about not having a UMD drive. We had this when the PSP Go came out. People really need to move with the times. Does your shiny Blue Ray player have a slot for Betamax Video Cassettes, no, it doesnt. Things have moved on since then.

Re: The Next Generation Portable Entertainment Device...

this would be fantastic if they added mobile phone features as why carry a mobile phone and psp2 when you can get it in 1 lol

also if its going to be ps3 port games then it wont sell as good as it will be another psp failure

Re: The Next Generation Portable Entertainment Device...

I be getting this on day one, just need to wait and see what kind of 3G contracts are availible and then decide between buying it using one of them or just buying it outright.

My biggest concern with it is that the 3DS is coming out about 9 months before it, with Nintendo already being the handhold choice for a lot of people, I think that might be too much of a time gap between the 2.

I think it's more to do with Battery Usage than Read/Write speeds. As soon as you used a memory card with a game loaded onto it, it used far less battery power and the fact you could potentially have several games on one Memory card saving having to carry UMD's around.

I'm interested to see where the Flash Card system goes and how games will be bought, because are they bought on a Flash Card, or do we only buy games on the Store, which means no resale value, making the NGP possibly quite expensive for gaming.

If we are to buy games on the Store, I would expect them to be half the price they are in the shops, due to the fact there is no need for the middle man Game Shop, no physical media, no manuals or box, so the cost of store games should show this.

a £30-£40 UMD PSP game should effectively cost £15-£20 on the store at least, anymore than that, and I won't be buying it.

Not forgetting the fact that it would be competing with Apple and it's App store. You can get some extremely good games on there for very little money.

True, but Sony definitely need to take into consideration the money people have spent on there PSP's and UMD's.

They don't seem to willing to give people access to the games they already bought to work on the new system if it means Sony losing money.

Just look at the PS3 and PS2bc, they are now rereleasing PS2 games in HD, which could have easily been improved using the PS3 and PS2bc, but they weren't making any money from it.

I not bothered about my UMD drive, because I always found it a drain on battery and a pain to use. But I need to know I can transfer my games over to Digital Media. After all, the games aren't really worth much now anyway, so what cost is there in selling them on??

Not really fussed by the 3DS. They have released so many versions of the Gameboy over the last few years, with very little that has improved them, I can't see the 3D really working all that well on such a small device that makes it all that usable.

For me, and this is one thing I am really happy about, is that the NGP has a decent size touch screen, has decent connectivity and will hopefully link in well with the PS3, more so than the PSP does now.

My DS hardly gets played with now due to the lack of exciting titles(More puzzle games, yawn) and the graphics haven't improved at all.

Also, the fact the screen size isn't very good or clear(My iPhone isn't that much bigger on screen size, but the quality is far superior) makes me not want to play with any more gameboys.

The 3DS could well be a FAD for a short period of time, before people get bored with it and just see it for another version of Gameboy that doesn't change anything. It may be a novel feature with no need for glasses, but seeing as it's only for one person, no real enjoyment in that.

When you see all the smart phones out there and how easy they are to interact with other devices and the internet, and especially with Touch Screen technology improving all the time, that for me is where it's at.

Re: The Next Generation Portable Entertainment Device...

This isn't a portable in my opinion because it's too big. Like tablets most people will use them at home because a) using them in public makes you look like a pr*ck and b) they are so expensive you may as well paint a sign on your back asking to be robbed.

The PSP Go is fine - I've had one since launch and have been really happy with it - especially with the smaller size. minis have been great on it and some of the newer PSN games that are more bite-sized have been great value like Half Minute Hero, Patchwork Heroes, the Badman games, Gravity Crash, etc, etc. The old faves play great on it including Wipeout, Ridge Racer, GT and GTA.

The only issue is PSN and the lack of retail titles and the prices when they appear. This is a problem for PS3 too with the pricing issues on Assassin's Creed, Prototype, etc.

People go on about physical media but the iPhone, etc have shown that download only can work if devs have the install base to make a decent amount of money. Okay, you can't sell the game when you've finished with it but the convenience of not carting around carts/discs makes up for it - I have 100 titles on my Go and never have to bother with swapping anything around - If I fancy playing something I'm playing it within 30 secs.

Downloads might not be practical for the big games from big devs but to be honest I'd rather have a modest game on a handheld than Uncharted - I have Resistance on the Go and it's a great game and everything but try playing it on a train for more than 5 mins - eye strain, hand cramp and deaths due to being bumped around - not much fun.
