With the number of replies above, it seems that a newer firmware update may have changed how to do this. I currently dont have access to a PSP, but as soon as I do, i will see how to do it.

 I bought a used PS3 today and had the same problem. I had to create a new user on the PS3 and delete the old one, and then the email connected to the old one was no longer connected and I was able to get in without getting the error message. It was simply telling me that I was using the wrong email because it only had the previous owner's email registered.

Yeah, the process for the PS3 is very similar to the PSP, except as you pointed out, you need to create a new user account for the console, then sign into PSN on that account.
