Photo Posting Help

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was originally posted by LincolnNZ in the Warhawk section but he was good enough to update and modify this guide for general use on the forums. Thought I would repost considering how often I see people looking for help on this subject.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok here's how to upload images to this forum's messages and for your signature.

Before we start, you can click any link in this message and it should take you to a new
window and leave this one open so you won't lose your place. If you want to edit your photos you can
download a free editing programme at www.gimp.org
This can get a bit technical but basically, you need to make sure your
final image has been "flattened" so there is only one layer before you
save. To make sure small text is still readable, save the file as a
".png" file. Otherwise a ".jpg" file is fine.

To upload an image to the internet:

1. Use a photo sharing site such as photobucket
- signup as a user (it's free) and create a new album called something
like "Warhawk". Make sure you leave it as public or you may have
trouble displaying images through other sites. If you have a large
photo, you can reduce the size for displaying in this forum by clicking
on "Reduce size to" and then "640x480" which appears as this size in
the forum (ignore holly22, she's all talk and no action):

See the end of this message for some more sizing samples.

2.  Once you have uploaded your file click on the "Link options" text under the image:

3.
This brings up the following box. Select the two options that are
checked here and then select the "always" checkbox, then save. Note
that this forum doesn't work with the "IMG for bulletin boards and
forums" option which causes confusion:

To insert an image into a message:

1. Back
on the photobucket screen that shows all your images, you should now
see two link options under the image. To use your image in this forum's messages, click in the box next to "Direct Link" under your
image. This should copy the link to your clipboard (or you can
highlight it and right click and copy or Ctrl C).

2. In your
message, when you have the text cursor where you want your image to
appear, select the tree icon, 3 icons to the right of the smiley face
icon. This should bring up a popup box. If you have trouble with this, your browser security settings may be blocking the popup. In this box, paste your copied link
into the "Image URL" box (right click, paste or Ctrl V). Click "Insert"
and the image should immediately appear in your message. Note that if
you want the image to be centred (like on this page) just click the
centre alignment icon directly before clicking the tree icon.

To insert an image into your signature:

1. For
this, instead of the "Direct Link" under your image in photobucket, you
need to click in the "HTML code" box and copy the link.

2. Now go to your
"My Profile" page within this forum. Right click in the white space of the
signature box and select paste. Save and you're done. This will change your signature for all past and future posts.

Notes on sizes

The 320x240 option looks something like this:

and the 640x480 option like this:

If
you get stuck, feel free to send me a message or post in this thread.
There's plenty more to image editing in Gimp that I can tell you some
of too (I'm not an expert but I can help out).

Catch ya,

LincolnNZ

P.S.
If you want to look around Photobucket before you sign up, go to the www.photobucket.com website and enter an image to search for. You will then be able to browse through other user's albums. Just hover your mouse over each image to see the link options. To save
an image, click on it then right click on the larger version and select
"Save Image As". Be aware that many pictures are copyrighted.

Tip:
To capture screen shots like I have used in this messge, just make sure
you're looking at the screen you want and press the "PrtScrn" button on
your keyboard. Go into your image editing software, create a new image
at your screen size then right click and select paste.

Re: Photo Posting Help

Or if you don't want that annoying HTML link back to Photobucket in your signature, you can use this code and just replace where it says "SIG URL HERE" with the Direct Link from Photobucket. This means that you can also set your Photobucket profile to private and people will still be able to see your pretty sig :smileywink:

Re: Photo Posting Help

You can choose in your Account Settings on Photobucket to have your pictures link back to photobucket or not.

Bet you didn't know that, ValiX.

I didn't actually :smileytongue: Just proves that you learn something new everyday.

But then again, my Photobucket account is old, and I've only ever used it for uploading pictures and linking them to places on the web :smileywink:

Thanks for the info:smileyhappy:
