If you're only upgrading the amp but using the same speakers it'll sound exactly the same. HDMI doesn't offer any quality increase since it's digital, just like Digital Optical. What it can do is carry 7.1 Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD signals, but if you don't have 7.1 speakers then these aren't of much use to you.

I'm not yet but I'm hoping to pick up a Denon amp over the next month or two which will have HDMI and decode the new formats. I haven't actually heard the new formats but I've been told the sound is better then your standard optical or coax connection, mainly because of the lossless sound in 7.1 you get from using HDMI. Apparently the sound is alot more ambient because of the extra detail and the transition between sound moving from one speaker to the next is alot smoother.

Eh? I thought it would be the increased bitrate of the signal.

There will be an improvement of sound quality as Optical can only carry 5.1 channels of Lossy Compressed sound (Dolby Digital, DTS etc) while HDMI can carry Lossless  5.1 sound (Dolby TrueHD, DTSHD etc).  Just increasing the quality of the speakers would help with the difference of sound quality, but he should still hear a better sound coming from his speakers.

Think of it like Optical is an MP3 sound file, while HDMI Lossless Audio is coming straight from the CD itself.

Re: Post Your Gaming Area Setup

HDMI is much better...   dvd optical = dolby dig 5.1, 664kbps or (dts)1.5mbps max                                                                                                                                                    bd HDMI  =  dolby HD & dts HD 7.1 (games), 5.1(movies)  around and above the 6mbps!!!

i thought that the ps3 did the decoding of the formats then sent the sound out via hdmi?? well i've had a hdmi amp for about 2 months 7.1 with all the new fruit. i've only got a 5.1 setup as i dont have a spare set of speakers and wont be getting them anyway but the few bluray movies i have watched have sounded fantastic. my amp came with the little detachable microphone that helps you setup the sound staging so it all sounds good.

i dont have a pic but my gear consists of:

40" bravia x series

sony 7.1 amp

sony dvd recorder

sony vcr

sony speakers

sony ps3

nintendo wii

Yeah it does but I don't have an amp with HDMI. Does the PS3 decode DTS-HD MA though? I thought it only decodes Dolby True HD, so it would relie on an amp to take care of the DTS-HD MA info. I'm new to this so I could be wrong.
