I was just looking to buy one and I can't seem to find any available.
Is this thing dead? When did this happen?

I thought I remember seeing PS2s along side modern consoles in catalogs just the other week.

The PlayStation 2 is definitely still being manufactured.

You'd have to ask your local retailer for stock availability. They should usually be able to order in anything that's still in production.

Would you know any stores that would sell them? I have checked ebgames.com.au and they only have pre owned, where would I go to get a brand new one?

Check them out and see if they have any stock, perhaps ring around and if a nearby store has stock, pick it up or get it transferred to your local store.

I'm pretty sure GAME group and its associated stores aren't stocking them because of their enormous number of preowned ones to shift... and their financial state isn't really accommodating enough to buy in more stock of PS2s.

It really is pretty amazing that they still produce them. I wonder where they all go too

Thats hard. You should still  be able to purchase a console. but i dont know if there still being made. You might have to ask person that works at sony or your local retailer. Sony havnt said that there not making them anymore.

they dont really advertives ps2 console anymore. they are very cheap though. but theres really no point since sony is releasing ps2 games in the psn store finally. i just hope they release most of them especially the gta's and crash bandicoots i would definitly buy them

I don't really see the Playstation 2 these days. Though, I'm sure you'll still be able to find somewhere to purchase one.
