PS2 compatibility

Sorry for asking if this has been answered already.

I recently bought 80 gig ps3 having never owned a playstation2. One game i've been dying to play is Final Fantasy 12 which i bought just the other day. I was under the impression that the PS3 was backwards compatable however when i put the disc in my ps3 says it doesn't support PS2 games.

I've checked this website and found that i should be able to play it but i need a  PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor Start-Up Disc. Could someone tell me what this is, where i could find one and if there is any other way to play ps2 games.

Thanks for any help given

Re: PS2 compatibility

Youb can't play PS2 games on the 40/80/160gb models at all.

The only way it would be possible if it was added in a firmware update.

Re: PS2 compatibility

Any idea if that's likely to happen anytime soon?

Why does it say it is possible on this website somewhere?

Re: PS2 compatibility

It's only possible on the 60GB version, it's done through a combination of hardware and software emulation, meaning without the hardware no other model will support it, regardless of firmware updates.

It is possible using only software, but chances are it would be inferior

Re: PS2 compatibility

Hi,

As has already been said, only the initial 60GB PS3 supports backwards compatibility.  At this time there are no plans to re-introduce this feature to any future PS3 models.
