It's amazing still seeing a question like this. Just shows how successful the PS2 has been.
Mate the PS3 is fantastic, and not just for games, you might find your doing loads of different things with it and your PS2 will still get use, that's how it is with me.
One thing though, it's a high definition console, to get the most out of it, in terms of gaming and high definition films you can get, unlike the ps2 it's really great to have a high definition screen to go with it. Not essential but high definition stuff needs something high definition to actually display it at the best resolution. Putting bluray on a SD CRT screen is no better than watching a DVD for instance.
