Collectors Editions are a mixed bag. I think the Heavy Rain one was fine. Same price as standard edition for a limited print run giving people that extra push to purchase on release day. Because it's the same price pretty much as the standard edition the extra content being downloadable doesn't really matter, it's free.
When you paying alot more for a 'collectors' edition, thats when I agree that getting mostly downloadable content is annoying. Somthing physical for your heard earned cash is great. Most of the DLC in collectors editions is released online later anyway, so to get something colletable is pretty much the reason I may buy a collectors edition.
What really peeves me off is when the editions differ across areas. Arkham Asylum for example, advertised as having certain things, then the EU release comes out as a cheapened version. Why?
I used to buy collectors editions all the time, but now have reservations and normally only buy them if I can see them in a shop. My fav collectors edition it either Fallout 3 (cool bobble head figure and tin) or GTA IV (nice little safety deposit box, duffle bag etc..). Both editions were £20 more than standard and had loadsa collectibles.

I agree about the DLC in special editions... As it will just go to waste.
In the case of the GoW3 Ultimate edition, putting the documentary in the EU versions on a DVD disc instead of all the DLC we are going to get would of been better.
Also what if you do not have internet? All these special editions with DLC and its a complete waste for them.
In this day and age it appears the downloadable content is obviously what manufacturers prefer, as it does not cost as much for them to make.
I personally think its a disgrace, its happening on all consoles and even PC games.
You buy and download the game from say STEAM or some other place.
Do you get the Disc? No.. Do you get the manual with nice colours printed on artwork paper? No.
Yet I've seen games the exact price as what they are in stores.
Same thing with Sonys PSP Go, .... All electronic goods. I really don't believe in it.
I hope its just a craze that disappears...

It's a collector's edition. The clue's in the title. Your point shouldn't be an issue if the purchaser is collecting.

When it comes to Collectors Editions, my problem isn't with DLC. My problem is, when ya get the thing home and realise the stuff inside looks rubbish. One game in particular was Batman Arkham Asylum, I had the collectors edition pre ordered for a couple of months before it actually got released and only for the manager of the shop letting me check the insides out before I bought it, I would of been 50 notes down for a cheap looking crappy batarang that on pictures looked amazing.
Thats pretty much the only problem I have with Collectors sets, I can deal with DLC.

I agree with most of you but they're a mixed bag these "collectors editions". We have to admit, there are one or two good ones out there. I got the Batman: Arkham Asylum collectors off eBay for only £35 and yes the Batrang was seriously crap but I was just grateful that I got it for less than a new copy of the normal edition.
I got the HMV exclusive of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, which was retailing for about £60 on release around September/October but ended up picking it up for £30 when they had the Christmas sale on. More than worth it. Ok so all's you get is a soundtrack, a costume code and a mini comic but for £30 new, I can't complain.
Let's not forget the GTA IV and Modern Warfare 2 collectors editions either. We were told that the GTA IV collectors was for those who pre-ordered almost a year in advance and although it was £70, I do think it was probably the best one to date. I think everybody would have wanted a piece of the Modern Warfare 2 collectors if it wasn't so damned expensive. I saved up for a couple of weeks after HMV put it up on their site but by the time I got the money together, they'd sold out. People were selling them on eBay for £250! Looking back, I'm glad I actually didn't buy that particular one. Ok the night vision goggles or the statuette (depending on which pack you chose) looked cool but £130?!?!
I don't know, I guess it depends on personal preference. If you want to spend that little extra for something a little extra then go for it but not £130. :-\

don't buy it then quite simple.
Ira a bit of a naive view...
Lets say you spent 70 notes on a game special edition with the bonus content DLC and Sountrack DLC and skins DLC and interviews and making of video DLC...
Then you get home and you download everything, then your PS3 YLOD, and say that was your fith activation of your account... that content is lost to you forever, even though you bought it..
Lets say you go through a tough stage lose your job and finances are bad and have to get rid of the internet... your screwed..
Lets say you buy it realise its junk and wish you hadnt spent 70 notes on it and want to trade it in.... ***** you cant... cuz the dlc is not available to anyone else.. you used it..
Now be honest, instead fo getting so defensive about it admit you would rather have the contents on CD or DVD Just in case, plus you can use that media away from your PS3 you can stick it on your IPOD to keep you ocupied on way to work instead of being restricted to your PS3.
I do buy special editions because I want the extra content but I want physical media, even if they add a couple of quid onto the price.. I would also have expected that for the GOW Ultimate Trilogy.
I can buy DLC Movies for more money than i can goto HMV and buy the DVD for.. Why is it more expensive to sell it as DLC than to sell it as DVD in nice case with artwork, that you can take round your mates and watch with a few beers etc..

DLC in collectors editions is all about money.
I will explain, most people trade their games, or buy second hand games. This gives the retailler money but not the developer. If you buy a collectors edition, that is second hand, and you are forced to buy those extra multiplayer maps, the developer finally gets some money for this game.
In other words, we would get this content on disc, if we did not trade second hand games.
