Re: 100mb Virgin Media Package, only 0.5 - 12mb on PS3!

Netflix will probably be fine as it isn't hosted by Sony on PSN.

DNS servers resolve domain names (ie playstation.com) to an IP address, ie

dmac~ main$ nslookup playstation.com
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: playstation.com
Address: 117.104.134.11

OpenDNS is a reputable service provider (Google also provide some free to use ones too) and will be what your playstation uses to resolve those domain names to IP addresses. If you don't specify your default DNS servers will be located at your ISP and some people have problems with them, so they switch to someone else's, it can solve their problems, sometimes It does not though.

Re: 100mb Virgin Media Package, only 0.5 - 12mb on PS3!

I'm very surprised nobody has even suggested this which is in fact the problem.

PS3's hardware is limiting but not the issue here.

PC shows 40meg + great

Mac shows 40meg + great

PS3 shows 12ishmb + ok

by default signing into PSN or using any PSN service i.e gaming online, PSN Store downloads including their film rentals. (I can't vouch for NEtflix lovefilm etc) you will automatically limited to around 12-14mb download speeds. It's PSN's fair play usage. No matter if you pay for 100mb speed or 20mb speed you will be capped at a speed of 14mb or slightly less.

Run a speed/ internet test on your XMB.The idea is the eventually everyone in the world will have a speed higher than 10mb this at the current time is more than enough to play games  online with a low-ish ping and have a good online experience. And it's low enough for the people with still only at 5mb connections like BT broadband and SKY etc to play catch up. thus making the difference similar.

Obviously certain games have certain protocols with ports and who has priority due to conenction strengths etc.

But unless you bridge, or you use open DNS from your PC to PS3 download speed won't increase past 12-14mb capped speed. And this will only work PSN store downloads. Gaming is excluded.

Your equipment is not at fault. Just the way PSN is set up for 'fair-play' usage.

One of the best ways is to use homeplugs like someone suggested before with your ps3 and make do with it. Open up PSN ports via your router or put your PS3 in DMZ (Default server) to allow all incoming connections via PS3. - make sure your PS3 has a static IP address also.

That's all you can do.

Re: 100mb Virgin Media Package, only 0.5 - 12mb on PS3!

i wouldn't use http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

my router syncs at 20mb but i'm only getting 12mb there on my ps3

i'd try these 3:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

http://www.ookla.com/speedtest.php

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bw.asp

i always delete history, search history & cache prior visiting the site & get 17mb every time, which is about right for 20mb sync

Can you point me to where Sony state this 12-14 cap limit on the PSN?

So you can get 17Mb on your PS3 through other speedtest sites but the http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk gives you 12Mb?

That is what the OP is getting on a wired PS3.

Perhaps the OP should try the other sites you mention on a wired PS3 to see what he gets.

How can you get 17Mb IF what the other users says is true that there is a 12/14Mb cap?

because there isn't a cap, otherwise people upgrading from adsl to 40mb fibre wouldn't report that downloads now take 1/4 the time they used to.

yep but only at those 3 sites.

it's because of the browser.

prior to the update it had a while back, different sites worked fine & were both accurate & conistent.

now it's just those 3 (that i've found so far & believe me, i've looked)

i'm on sky adsl2+. i can't say how well they'll work with a different isp or cable/fibre connection though.

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Would putting the ps3 into DMZ help?

I'm also with VM superhub, no speed problems on PSN here.

So the poster talking about a cap limit is talking utter crap...DMZ & OpenDNS are the way to go...certainly made a difference to my setup...

Re: 100mb Virgin Media Package, only 0.5 - 12mb on PS3!

What he said /\ putting ps3 into DMZ opens ps3 network up to accept all connection from the router. This will make a big difference with download speed. Also Get rid of the superhub if you stick with wifi, turn it into a modem only and buy a better router.
