1080p on wireless possible?

[ Edited ]

Hi All

I`m really struggling to get 1080p playback with ps3 server working without it stuttering. 720p is fine but anything above 20mps playback and it stutters. I`ve bought a 300mps N router which is downstairs from the ps3 thinking that would help, but didnt. The PC running the server has a  150mpbs N card and i`ve now just bought a 150mps N wifi extender for next to the PC which gives me 100% strength across everything.

So why cant it playback 1080p still? Anyone know why? Unforuntatley wired isnt an option as its not our house.

Thanks

Paul

Re: 1080p on wireless possible?

Is the media server having to perform any transcoding of the files on the fly?

Just a guess, I'm not 100% up to speed on media servers but that could cause stuttering/buffering.

you need 2 set the bandwidth limit to 15-20 Mbps or go wired

Re: 1080p on wireless possible?

ok thanks. I changed the max bandwidth to 20mb/s in ps3 media server. And it now worked fine for one 1080p mkv file that I had been testing , it stayed around the 10mb/sec when playing. I watched about 15mins without a stutter. Then I tried another 1080p mkv file and it went up to 50mb/sec and was stuttering. Weird or what? Any ideas?

H264 is not fixed bit rate stream .

H264 allows the encoder to set the buffer size this can be upto whatever the encoder sets at the time of encoding, this means that say the buffer is set at 20Mb/s and max bit rate is set to 20Mb/s the PS3 will play data at up to 40Mb/s on screen for complex sceens.

The buffer is not constant per file and can change per file buy the encoder.

Also frames before and after the current frame are used for frame reference data points, H264 needs a longer time frame buffer than other codecs.

The up shot of this is that average bit rate means nothing for H264. You can have extremly high Bit rates for short bursts of time. it just means the reset of the film is realy low bit rates.

The router won't make a difference - the PS3 doesn't have an N compatible card.

If you cant go wired, then how about homeplugs. 1080p over wireless is not possible as others have hinted at, your lucky to get 720p without any stutters or dropouts.

Re: 1080p on wireless possible?

ok thanks, think i`ll just look into a dedicated video streamer like a roku 2 or apple tv. Then I can still have the ps3 for games and something else for video.

A dedicated streamer should be ok - they tend to be N, but you could still have issues with wireless.
