32mb cache

I have just purchased a 320gb western digital HDD from ebay for £43 it has got a 32mb cache does that make any difference to the ps3 because the orignal hdd in the ps3 has about 8mb cache.

Re: 32mb cache

Yeah it will be fine. I mean... 32 is a bigger number than 8 isn't it? Bigger numbers are always much more awesome

Re: 32mb cache

From what other people have said about their experiences, better HDD specs don't make much of a difference on the PS3. A larger cache might slightly improve load times and possibly make stuff slightly smoother but there isn't likely to be a significant difference. Try it if you want though.

The one thing you want to be wary of is higher RPM. It does make things slightly faster, but it increases the temperature of the PS3 and the chance of YLOD. Also check the HDD is 9.5 mm high and not 12, as a 12 mm HDD won't fit.

2.5" is the width, you can get 2.5" ones that are 9.5 mm and 12 mm high, 12 mm ones usually have a particularly high capacity, so a 320 GB one should be 9.5 mm. I forgot to give actual numbers but yeah, 5400 rpm is what you want.

Re: 32mb cache

A higher cache size improves small file reading and writing which in tern makes performance better in certain areas when reading large/small files or writing them in a PS3 it wont make much difference. The PS3 still uses SATA-150 which is years old we're currently now on SATA-300/600 spec so a new HDD from todays specs available would be downgraded by the system to read/write at SATA-150 speeds.

Which if I remember rightly on a PC back in the day if you used 1 single HDD average read/writes where 74/90mb per second depending on your system hardware only way to ever get true near full speed was to RAID 2 HDD's together etc.
