Sony Australia are replacing anybodys who breaks whether in or out of warranty. I think Sony UK's call centre are maximising profits by asking £128 before Sony will have to eventually give in if they want to maintain customer loyalty.
DO NOT PAY THEM. JUST KEEP HARASSING THEM AND THE RETAILER UNTIL THEY GIVE IN - QUOTE SALE OF GOODS ACT 1979.

Couldn't agree more. Yesterday I rang HMV where I bought my brick in Jan 2008. They told me the usual (store policy bull) so I tried to quote SOGA. This made them really awkward and they mumbled something about ring Sony and they hung up, and we all know how Sony respond
. I'm not really bothered about the small claims court so instead I disassembled my PS3 and cleaned the lens. No dice, discs won't even spin discs now. I really hope this gets sorted soon. ![]()

I cannot absolutely say that it was a firmware update, but the same symptoms as others. updated->gamefreeze->no more disc loading. Barely weeks out of warranty period. No reciept.
The Ozzie ps3 helpdesk did not even want to know about it without a receipt. I asked if this was a common problem and the reply was "there are no common problems".
I am not paying nzd$315 for a fix just yet. I want some better service from Sony.
After this I will never buy a console again, I am staying with PC. They [redacted due to profanity] you for the price of games and then when stuff breaks you cannot fix it yourself. Sure Pc's are three times the price, but I have control of what gets fixed and what does not. At least things do not break after a year for no good reason.

60GB Console bought on launch in UK.
I'm in the same boat after the latest update 3.01 the Blu Ray drive doesn't work at all. Blu Ray movies don't work or games. Normal DVD's and CD's work fine.
Can any one confirm that it is the update or not though?

Only Sony could confirm if it actually is the update or not, as only they have access to the code to know what they did.
At the moment, they are (still) denying it.
Whilst there are many owners who had a blu-ray fail after 3.0/1, this is not being taken as 'proof'

I purchased my 40GB in Dec 2007 played it loads to start with then once the novelty wore off I used it less for gaming and more for movies. I did the update to 3.01 last week as the misses got herself Lego Batman and over the weekend, a few hours later my peace was gone and she is complaining the PS3 has just hung and wont do any thing. So after a reset and restart she carried on playing and 10 min later same thing happened again so I do the normal check the disc and as expected as it’s a brand new disc no marks so I try my trusty old COD4 and just as it starts a level it hangs so we gave up on it at the time and decided to watch Monsters Inc on Blu that she also purchased and all seemed good for about 5 min and then that just hung too.
So now feeling well ***** off my Baby is broken and was very surprised to see the number of responses with almost identical problem and now hoping that maybe play station has some something to do with it and im not just unlucky, as ive just seen the price of new Blu drives for it.

It is a tiny fraction of all ps3's though. So watch them...
