Add my name to the list, I couldn't even reply to the usa site. At least I know the issue is world wide.
I have model # CECHE01 (80GB) plays ps2 also. A soon as I downloaded FW3.01, (missed 3.0) my ps3 would not recognize BRay Disc or PS3 games, it plays regular dvd and ps2 games as good as new. Sony says it is not an issue, but we could fix this non issue for $150.00. I truely think that sony is so much in the red with this system that it can not stand up and say will fix it like Micrsoft did. I am not an xbox fan, never have been. Looks like they will be getting my money from here on out. If sony does accept resposibility I might stay with the ps3 but after a month it does not look they are going to recognize the issue. There should be a lot of cheap ps3 games on Amazon shortly. I'll hold my uncharted 2 for another 2 weeks, if there is not a fix...............SOLD to the highest bidder.

I'm having a similar issue.. and has only happened since FW3.01, which was forced on to me by Brutal Legend.
Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks since the update, and now it reads everything perfectly fine but then intermittently it will just stop reading the disk during gameplay only, making the following noise "swow swow swow swow brrrk swow swow swow swow brrrk" until I try to eject, and then it invariably resets the console after a short while.
Mine is a CECHC03 60GB UK Launch, was working perfectly when on FW3.00, had no reason to update to FW3.01 as I wasn't getting problems playing "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune".

In my view i see sony as a bunch of crooks trying to rob you blind. I have had it with this problem guess what on my b day which was close to when the problem happened i could not play any of the games that my friend brought me. I felt so annoyed and so frustrated i just want sony to pay for what they have done and accept it god how hard is it. Atleast admit that their is a problem. How about sony come out and face the crowds thats what i say. I will be writing to watchdog very soon about this matter. I can not stand this anymore!
If you do write to watchdog be sure to add this thread in your message. I found another thread that explores in depth possible hardware causes ie. it being a coincidence. However after much deliberation they came to find thats it something to do with the motherboard IC of the blu ray playerwhich can be directly affected by firmware. So...It seems we aren't wrong about this
I think it's coming to the time of not hoping aymore and taking action! It isn't solely related to 3.0/3.01 but has been reoccuring to different systems throughout different updates. If you want to find out more of the techy side of things check out that link in which it happened to a guy who actually repairs the consoles and knows what he's talking about.

Hey, found an up to date article on the law suit. Hopefully they'll be forced to comment and make amends for this technological disaster ![]()

yep - same issue!
No disc icon in the main menu, everything else working perfectly.
Sony suck - my next gen console will be from Microsoft (who arent much better but fixes are cheaper)

I would be very interested to hear what they say! But isnt this ridiculous sony have got to pay to get a high class lawyer and everything else and if they lose there going to have to pay out more. To be honest the evidence to say that this problem was caused by this firmware update is astronmical. This would mean that they would have to pay out more. If they just accepted it they would save so much more money!
guess it depends on how likely they think they are to win (and what their definition of 'win' is)
IF Sony loose the case, then it will be a HUGE PR nightmare for them.
And as you mentioned, they will be potentially stuck with even bigger repair costs.
If they win the case, then not only do they avoid the repair costs, but they block any future cases (at very least in that country, if not worldwide), and are no worse off (PR wise) than they are today.
Ultimately, the problem for any law suit is going to be proving that the f/w caused the problem
Yes, there are a significant number of people posting that 3.0/1 killed their PS3s. But that has no legal standing unless you can start physically bringing those owners into the court room.
There are (literally) 1 or 2 videos floating around of people upgrading to 3.0 and bricking their PS3s - unfortunately I doubt that this will be overwhelming enough evidence.
The other possiblity is to get 100 PS3s into the courtroom, all still running previous firmware.
Prove they read discs.
Update each one (under controlled conditions)
See how many still read discs.
Can't see that happening though ![]()
