Here here my PS3 has just joined 'the unable to read discs after the firmware 3.0 update' club. 

At first I thought it was worn out as my PS3 is two years and four months old, but just after reading all the threads I'm starting to believe that it may be related to firmware 3.0, as it worked perfectly fine prior to the update.

 And the symptoms are the same put a blu ray or PS3 game in and nothing happens no disc icon on XMB, no auto start. Although one thing I did notice during playback of Transformers last night there was a loud crack sound which I ignored thinking it might have been the expansion of plastic from the CPU heat. Again not sure if its related but something unusual to take note of.

 I swear I must be the most unluckiest pr!ck alive with this thing as I just got it back from repair in July after paying $350 for the yellow light error which I could of spent on the slim and to make matters worse Modern Warfare 2 is out on Tues. Well I'm ringing up Sony on Monday *again* wish me luck (as I clearly need it)

Just tried again on the phone to sony again they would not have any of it. I am annoyed and frustrated at this matter as for a known FACT this was caused by SONY's FIRMWARE UPDATE. This problem is spread all over the forums and i am sure they know it is. I own a sony laptop two tv's a ps3 and a dvd player. I am sick, disgusted and tired of SONY's constant lying, money pinching and ignorance. The only way sony is ever going to get a penny out of me again is if they replace my console free of charge. How dare they blame this matter on us most of us loyal customers who have stuck with sony through and through. SONY are just a bunch of crooks. Come on then sony how about you stop HIDING under the cupboards and actually talk like a man to all these people who you have let down. CAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW ITS MY FAULT AND EVERYONE ELSES COUNTING ABOUT 600 MORE PEOPLE!! I hope someone from sony is reading this cause i thought that the customer was nearly always right. I will not give in!

My 60GB PS3 has broken too, won't play any game discs or blu ray - just normal DVD and CDs.

Can't help thinking it's been done on purpose to try and get us oldies to upgrade to the PS3 slim....

Well I got my ps3 fixed for £100 then sold it for £145 so... I'm hoping my slim lasts longer than a year and 1 month now
I'm surprised/kind of glad a lot of people have had the same problem. We're united through misery!

How many of you moved your ps3 a lot or changed the hard drive? It'd be nice to find something similar between our ps3s unless Sony bought a load of cheap lasers and we were just unlucky getting them...

my ps3 for a little while now wont read any disk until the fan kicks then it works fine

I have 40gb one had 1 & 1/2 years, and the drive is dead.. after i upgraded the firmware as well not a happy bunny

Rang Sony today and they said they would fix it under warranty so I'm happy. I mentioned that it happened after firmware 3.0 and she replied (beating around the bush) that it wouldn't have caused it.

well this happened to my slim after owning it for 2 days. im still looking for the number to ring sony atm .

i got the 40gb the day they were released in the uk & mines has been sent away for a good 4 weeks now :@
