Will they replace it or do I have to fork out to buy a new one?

It depends on when you bought it, if it's still under it one year guarantee they'll replace it for free if you have the receipt or a bank statement.

ive had it since july 08 :smileyindifferent: just over a year.

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

It'll be £100 to get it fixed then, you get three month warranty and if you don't want to keep it you can sell it to a shop like Game for £145...

Pay £100 to be fixed or get slim for £200 from sainsburys.

Not that I have the money for either.

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

I rang Sony, and they said to Restore the settings, but this still might not work and might be required to be fixed.

Unfortunatly I cant afford to repair or buy a new system :smileysad:

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

CECHC03 March 2007 60gb Fatboy
Was fine after 3.01 Update forced upon me by Borderlands, after getting the platinum I moved onto Ratchet & Clank ACIT.

Tonight it just started Black Screening during Cutsceens/Looping music/No Audio when speaking to anybody & freezing when accessing Inventory after about 10 Minutes of play, each time I needed to Eject the disk to get back to the XMB.

:smileysad: I really hope that it wasn't the Update that was the cause

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

Add my name too!

Bought CODMW2,

When inserted into drive it popped up update to 3.01

As soon as i clicked ok the screen went black (no progress bar for the update or anything)

System rebooted itself after a few mins

Drive no longer useable!

Tried various other games and dvds, drive wont read any now.

I have the 40gb PAL version approx 18 month old

Rang Sony tonight, got put in queue on hold for an hour and a half before getting cut off!!

Not happy!!

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

Here’s were I got this article:

 http://www.voodish.co.uk/articles/sony-damages-blu-ray-drive-via-latest-update/

SONY damages BluRay Drive via latest update

Posted: October, 06 2009

Playstation PS3 Bluray drive problems have arisen from SONY’s latest Firmware (FW) updates, namely 3.0 and 3.0.1 - the updates were not tested on the older PS3 machines and have pushed the laser beyond its original specification, rendering the PS3 Bluray drive permanently unusable for games and movies.

The firmware update that was intended to decrease Blu-ray Disc read times by speeding up the motor and spindle, is causing an increased power draw.
The latest update seems fine for the newer systems made with 60nm [nanometer] and 45nm chipsets that use less power and therefore create less heat. But for the older, original 90nm chips, that already ran towards the hot side to begin with, it’s fatal. Too much power draw creates too much heat and leads to overheating and failure. It’s blatantly obvious to anyone who has worked with computers and laptops.

Nearly 900 responses from the Playstation NetworkIt seems that more and more people are experiencing the same Blu Ray drive errors after this update but SONY are denying it is a problem. Even if SONY admitted to it, there would be no way of restoring functionality to the Blu Ray drives as they are now permanently damaged by the updates.

Error Codes include: 80029906, 80029941

OUR ADVICE IS CLEAR; If you are one of the lucky ones who hasn’t upgraded from FW 2.8 to 3.0 or 3.0.1, then DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE on older (Piano Black finish) machines.

(however you view of  this) and get this known VERY pulblic!
