Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

Judgeman, to point to a couple of things in your post, you seem to be suggesting that the update issue has been halted with 3.10. Is there any evidence to suggest this at all? I.e game load times are now back to previous times for 60 gig machines, for example? Because unless update 3.10 fixed the problem of speeding up the older blu ray drives, there are still going to be ongoing, increasing numbers of 60 gig machines crapping out. Simples.
GAMES: CoD World At War, Uncharted 2, Far Cry 2, , Unreal Tournament 3, Wipeout HD Fury, Midnight Club LA, Motorstorm 1 and 2.

It is clear that Sony's update has caused major problems with entire Old PS3 users. Making us either buy Slims or 'repair' IE: Upgrade them for a nominal fee. The fact they wont acknowledge it is a disgrace. Thw EU must put a massive fine on this corrupt practice. Sony must aknowledge their update had a terrible effect on old ps3s. The Firmware caused massive issues with people and Sony must own up.

Unfortunately, it isn't that clear at all :smileysad:

many, many old PS3 are quite happily running 3.0/1

and whilst it is a mjor problem for the individual owner, there is not an overwhelming amount of evidence that it has affected a major amount of owners :smileysad:

I am a firm believer in the theory that 3.0/1 had the potential to kill blu-ray drives, and it would have appeared to have done just that.

But interested as I am in it, I have yet to see anything which could be used to prove it did it :smileysad:

Of course, Sony could do the 'right' thing and offer to replace broken PS3s at a significantly lower cost - but then (if the CP debacle was anything to go by), we would have people snapping up dead ones on fleabay, dumping them to Sony, and getting a new one for peanuts.

Pile of stinky stuff for genuine owners, no benefit to Sony, and greedy scum suckers who prey on others lack of knowledge are quids in :smileysad:

Ways round all that of course, but lots of hassle for Sony, for little obvious return :smileysad:

Judgeman..

You are getting the exact same problem I was, but mine had a slight difference.. every so often mine would be OK until I got to a certain point of reading the disks as if the motor couldn't push the laser to that location.. I would then quit the game, and it would then after a while reboot the console taking me back to the XMB.

Replacing the laser and deck solved it for me..

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

Sorry was still talking about update 3.01. Updated to 3.10 and still got the same problem. I was just suggesting sony may have "bricked" old machines with their 3.00 and 3.01 updates. Wheather willingly or unwillingly it happened. I just find it stange that so many people had problems soon after the updateds.

I thought I was alone till I read around the net a bit. I dont use it much as I prefer PC games, but love some games on PS3, Ie: MW2, Batman Arkam, MG4 etc. I dont own alot of games for it.  But it looks like to me the update did something to the blu ray drive and it became corrupt or irreversable with other updates.

@FOC_Reaper

Yeah looks that way to me too. Might just get Sony to do it. Dont trust the 'cowboy' shops around dublin. Better the Devil you know.

Judgeman..

I didn't trust any coyboys either... I did it myself.   Although it would be interesting to see how much Sony charge.. I get a feeling it may be about £150 though..

if your PS3 is still reading DVDs, you're having a 'normal' problem, not a 3.0/1 related problem :smileyhappy:

to fix this, you probably 'just' need a new laser unit.

you'll need to google to work out which one of the two available types you need, as different model PS3s use different lasers.

filldy job, but do the research, take your time and be careful, and you should be fine :smileyhappy:

obviously I'm assuming you are out of warranty, as the fix involves opening your PS3 up - and removing the warranty sticker.

you dont actually need a T10 - just a small flat sided one and a bit of care :smileyhappy:

bigger issue (not all that big!) is to make sure you get the correct laser unit, as the PS3s use one of two different types :smileyhappy:

Re: Add your name to the ps3 Blu ray dead/ not working list

You can add me too to the list.

I got 60gb PS3 (few years old) and bought Dragon Age: Origins yesterday and had to install the 3.01 and 3.10 updates both to start playing it. I guess I was using 3.00 before. Played couple of hours and PS3 worked fine.

Today, I found my PS3 not playing BD - discs (movies and games) anymore. Thought it was the BD reader that got broken but after reading these posts, I'm certain, that the 3.01 screwed my PS3 BD drive.

DVDs and downloaded games are working fine.
