Well if your ps3 isn't making any noise when you put a disc in it most likely is the moving part that's broken because that's where the noise comes from
It's just like if you held a ps1 disc instead of letting it spin it wouldn't read the disc.......
yes, indeed ![]()
which is part of the reason why that is the very question I occasionally been asking when people post up failures - but I've kinda given up, becuase I never got a definitive answer ![]()
and I can't test on mine, because it is (this'll kill it!) working right now...
so, asking what was replaced - just laser, or the whole unit, was a different tack ![]()

Ok, I dont think I have added my name to this list. V3.01 update last week, blu ray failure shortly followed. Uk 40bg CECHG03 series.
FYI Sony keep saying V3.01's only update was to fix something in Uncharted 2. Can anyone find a link to some proof of an updated bluray driver in V3.00? That will help.

One new laser and deck found on Ebay, £60 and free delivery later. I repair my 60GB launch console.
It's now back up and running.
If Sony have stated in an article that they didn't test the newer firmwares on the older launch console, then they are accepting liability and should be now providing a service to replair all consoles in and out of warranty with this blu-ray issue at their own cost.
THAT is VERY interesting
was it a complete deck, or 'just' the matchbox sized laser unit?
If it was just the laser unit, that (unfortunately) might throw some cold water on some (but not all) of the theories...
Is it a straight swap? Or is the board and drive "married"?
from memory, when I did mine a few months back, there is a circuit board mounted on or in (model dependant) the blu ray drive, and it is this board that is married to the PS3.
you can buy 'just' replacement lens kits, which are about the size of a matchbook, or you can also get the same lens kit pre-mounted on the rails - which looks like it ought to make the job a lot easier, but actually (apparently) doesn't.
The 'full' kit includes some of the motors - I think.
if the f/w really is pushing the BD beyond its limits, my personal view is that it would be moving parts which would be most likely to be the area of fail - ie the motors that move the laser head back and fore, or maybe the one that spins the disc itself.
Alternatively, it could be that the extra heat is causing the laser itself to burn out - but this feels (to me) to be somewhat less likely.
TTDegs - I replaced the whole unit, KEM-400AAA which is the laser module and deck.

Namorodo - It was a straight swap, the KEM-400AAA isn't married the PS3 in anyway, the BD controller board however, is. EDIT: Sorry correction, the controller board isn't married up to the PS3 but there is a NAND chip which is, if you were to replace the controller board, you would have to de-solder your existing NAND and re-solder on to the new one.
And the picture above is exactly what I bought, and it was new too. And then I found a fantastic video on youtube (split in 3 parts) which takes you through replacement on the KEM-400AAA.
I think it was the stepping motor (the one that moves the laser) that had failed.

Cheers Reaper, that helps a lot ![]()
At the very least it doesn't rule out the motors, and leaves us being able to point fingers at the statement:
"reduces load times for games" (or whatever the exact words were in the 3.0 press release) to be interpretted as "makes the motors work harder and kills some" ![]()
