Re: Ageism :-(

LBP looks like its aimed at kids but its far from it. I struggled and gave up on one of the last levels as it was frustratingly hard. There is nothing child friendly about this game and my 12 year old son couldn't even complete the first level! Plus with its deep create mode that even baffles me and I struggle to get to grips with.

Its like saying these Disney/Pixar films like Toy Story, Shreck, Ice Age etc are 'kids' films. There's more adult humour in these then there is for kids. You just dont see it until you've grown up. Just how you dont see that thsese games are not aimed specifically at kids, which tricked me when I bought The Sly Collection and frustratingly limped through certain challenging sections.

Re: Ageism :-(

I'm 40 and have been playing games for years, I was lucky enough to be more than old enough to sign the NDA agreements that come with Beta Status when I was offered it.

I assumed that as well as the requirement to sign an NDA the requirement that all beta's be 18+ meant that Sony could happily role out betas to all on their lists without having to try and identify those not aged 18+. Imagine the outcry in the Daily Mail if they found out that Sony was picking under 18's to play 18 rated games !! :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Ageism :-(

Yeah it just makes life esier so Sony dont have to roll out codes to those that are old enough. That would be a time consuming nighmare lol.

Suppose, LBP is quite a challenging game. However, I have manged to sit with my nephew ( 4 years old ) and they manged to play a few levels, not clearing them and getting all the stickers etc, but getting from point A to Z. But the creation does take patience, which I admit younger people lack ( I used to not be able to play the same game longer than an hour.. still have very little patience now, hence why I've completed a very little amount of games.

So maybe I have been lured into the trap of thinking that childrens games are childrens games, and may have to pick up the Sly collections or RnC again!

You are missing the point of Beta testing entirely though. Beta testing is, ostensibly, about finding faults on a particular game, they're generally not interested in opinions. More commonly though it is just a server stress test which, when opened up to the public, people your age get to 'test' and give your 'opinions' on.

This is exactly my view here...

Somebody mentioned the ZX Spectrum earlier in the thread.  That's a computer I had when I was around twelve years old, shortly after having a ZX81.  I also had a C64.  Games on computers like those were a million times harder than games like LBP 2 and I generally got around to completing most of them at that age.  And don't forget that you couldn't even save your progress back then.  You always had to start from scratch.

I've gotta tell you, most former 12 year olds from the ZX Spectrum age will laugh in your face for saying LBP 2 is hard.  I got through the whole of LBP2 in four or five days.  I thought it was easy.  If I was 12, I suspect it would have taken me two days.  Not because of having more time on my hands but because kids' reaction and coordination skills are better.

Your motor coordination and reaction times peak when you're in your teens and degrade for the rest of your life, so if anything, the twelve year old should be playing LBP 2 a million times better than his father.  The difficulty you experienced when playing LBP2 means zilch when it comes to the demographic the game is aimed at.

Re: Ageism :-(

I think that is true about finding games easier when you are younger because of reflexes etc. I had ecco the dolphin when I was 9 or 10 and loved it, I have fond memories of getting right to the end the struggling at the last bit.

I got the mega drive collection a little while ago and played it, it's bloody impossible!

I never once mentioned LBP2, I've never played it so I cannot comment on it.

I was referring to the end of LBP (all I can remember is rotating wheels) and dying lots and giving up in frustration. I can also remember lots of other places of instant death as well. The clunky controls didn't do the game any favours either which I found frustrating at times.

I was about 8 when I got my Spectrum, It dosen't make me any more a better gamer then those that didn't have one. We all have our limitations, and I'm quite happy to label myself as an average gamer, always have been, always will be (although thats subject to change as I get worse in my older age lol).

I love Lbp but i struggled to build a level but my 10 year old daughter has been playing & building her own levels since she was 8 she can't actually play the game better than me aswell.

Also the way she learnt quicker is building levels with other people

The presentation is very child friendly especially if you run through the tutorial as it demonstrates how to create things for your levels.

The levels she has built some of them aren't very good but they are made around what she wants & feels happy with the results.
