Am I harming this unopened dualshock 3 (Li-on battery)?

Hello,

My old 60gb PS3 conked out last year. So I bought a slim, and obviously, got a free controller with it.

That controller remains unopened (I bought it on 23/12/2010) to this day, am I harming the battery by having it uncharged or even touched for so long?

I've been using my 3 year old dualshock 3 all this time which is only just starting to have a shortened battery span. Should I switch to the other one? Will I be shooting myself in the foot in the long run?

I always thought I could use this current (3yearsold) DS3 til its death then shift over to the new (1 year old but never used) one, but now I'm a bit worried.

Lithium Ion batteries need to be charged at least once a year in order for them to remain in good working condition. I advise you give the unused DS3 a full charge ASAP. You don't have to start using it straight away.

ho crap okay then thanks

*edit* I plugged it into my PC and its charging up just fine, are there any signs of over-discharge? I tried to turn the controller on before plugging it in and it wouldn't work so it was definately low

If you plan on not using this dual shock controller for a while again, it's best to store it around 40% charge to maintain its longevity; leaving it for long periods of time at higher charges like 80 or 100% will reduce its capacity.

EDIT: Must circuits which utilise a lithium battery will detect when it has fully charged and cease charging to prevent over charging.

You can use the other controller when the current controller is charging; so you remain comfortable when gaming.

Yea this is what I do with mine. Would much rather play with a wireless controller than one that's wired and charging.

I have 3x DS3's one red, one white and the black one that came with my Slim purchase in the summer, I charge them and use them in turn and this appears to work ok for me, not lost either of the older ones yet :smileywink:
