Nice! I was planning on doing a full reflow of my YLOD system later in the week (replacing the thermal paste etc), but I might try the hairdryer trick first and see if that works. I only want it to work long enough to perform the data transfer to my slim. I'll have to research this method now.
EDIT: Trip, what's the actual method you used? I've seen/read a few different ones and some seem downright crazy
I took apart the bluray drive today to get my Uncharted 2 disk out , so I'm feeling confident about employing my 'disassembly' skills again ![]()

I followed this:

With any luck, it should start up after that. I know it's not an official fix, but it helped me get everything off my old PS3. If you are happy with sending in for an official fix, go ahead but there is no guarantee that YLOD won't reoccur with the repaired or refurbished model. I didn't want to take that risk so I bought a new PS3 and tried the hair dryer method.

Wondering if people can help me... I havent quite suffered YLOD however I have got a black screen on start-up.. Tried the old holding power button down etc etc to change it from SD to HD visa versa however nothing works, how do i go about getting my data off the HDD? Is it the same situation as YLOD?

heres the deal: same thing happened to me. im about to lose almost 140 gigs of game saves and stuff for no apparent reason. i have at length talked to Sony about why on gods green earth they would make the ps3 autoformat the HD, considering this YLOD thing happens ALL THE TIME (mostly due to their crappy craftsmanship), and the answer i get is "i honestly dont know why they do that." i then ask why they encrypt the harddrive, so i cant even put it into another computer to back my data up somewhere else so i can at LEAST get my stuff back when they send me back my playstation from their exorbitantly priced "service," and yet again "i dont really know the answer to that question." this is from a manager in their customer service phone line. here i am getting screwed out of five years worth of game saves, and they cant give a straight answer as to why.
i say we start a petition demanding that sony figure out some way of fixing this problem. it is rediculous for them to just say "oh well" when youve lost so much data youve payed THEM money to create. It isnt right, we are the consumers of their product, and deserve better treatment than "oh well" or "i dont know." they need to start some sort of service that either backs up and restores your data for you in event of a service or YLOD, or a cloud service where our game data can be saved on their servers so we dont have to deal with this bull*****. Its rediculous. Ill be starting a webpage, facebook site, or some other venue where we can tell sony to get their act together as far as this erasure of years of work is concerned. Sorry if i sound geeky, but i spent a LOT of my HARD EARNED MONEY with this company to enjoy my games, and believe i shouldnt ever have to even worry about apathy like this as a loyal customer.
If a moderator reads this, please email me and let me know what Sony plans to do about this KNOWN problem.

5 years of game saves?... why didn't you backup your hard drive WHILE your PS3 was working?
That's like trying to recover your data off a computer hard drive you've owned for 5 years when it's motherboard finally kicks the bucket.... yes you can do it, and save your data, but it's pretty risky.... what's to say your hard drive won't crap out at any point during it's use...

Hi SkullKand_E,
You would be best off posting on the appropriate forums for your region.
This is the Australia / New Zealand section.
Also, there is a cloud service for backing up game saves.
As well, any games you've previously purchased are always available for redownload as long as you have access to the account.

yesterday i decided to put my broken laptop hdd in my ps3 because i needed some more space its a 160gb, i first backed up my ps3 onto an external hdd then put in the 160gb hdd. it works perfectly but when i go to restore my back up it gets to around 70% then an error occurs. it turns off and i only get my non copyright gamesaves and video, music and photos. I've tried 4 times and this keeps happening.
I've had similiar problems trying to use an old laptop HDD to do a back up & restore. I've found when trying to copy large files across from my PC to the HDD it would freeze my system. So, my best guess is that it's a problem with the HDD, not with the PS3. I mean the HDD is from a broken laptop, perhaps it gets corrupted in some way when the laptop breaks.
