Recently, my 60 gig PS3 suffered the Y.L.O.D. (Yellow Light of Death) and there is no turning it on whatsoever. After contacting Sony, they sent me an email stating that I should back up my hard drive before I send it off because it will be formatted -- problem is, how do I back up my PS3 if it doesn't even turn on?
Any of you that have been in the same scenario or are in the same scenario, do you know any strategies to go about this? Do I have no other choice but to risk all of my media and game-saves and send my PS3 with my hard drive in it?
I've called a few computer technicians and I've also called Cavin Imports (Geelong) but none were able to help me with my problem.
I don't really know what to do at this point. Is there somebody that is able to back up my hard drive? Is there any place in Geelong or Melbourne I can take my PS3 to?
Thanks in advance.

I recently suffered this also. Once you've got YLOD of death your data is pretty much gone. The HHD is encrypted and you can't read it with your PC. Transferring it to another PS3 will only ask you to format the drive (if it hasn't failed). SONY can not replace your data even if you send in your PS3 to have it repaired and returned, it will return formatted.
Unfortunately, your saves games and data are gone. ![]()
My advice, backup your saves to a USB stick. I learnt this the hard way also.

My advice for everyone (yes, I know that this doesn't help those of you that have already lost all your data) is to do a full system back on a regular basis.
I, myself, like to do one at least once a month. ![]()

Sorry for sounding n00bish but how would I back up my saves on a USB without switching on my PS3? I have two 2 gig memory stick duos so hopefull that'll be enough for my game saves.
Unfortunately, as grabda previously said, once you get the YLOD all your data is essentially gone, kaput, off to the great big recycling bin in the sky.
There's no way to get if off the hard drive as the PS3 encrypts it so that no other system can read it and if you put the hard drive in a different PS3 it will simply ask you to format it to use it with that system.

You could always try using norton ghost, or a HDD imaging software.
It might work, but Im not 100% sure.
It wont work on a diff PS3 I think.
BTW, I think you can just ask sony to give your original PS3 back.
Then you wouldnt need to worry about backing up your PS3(Or HDD).

Ive had no luck with my Playstation 3 consoles either, I went through about 3 inside one month before I got one that actually worked and now its broke to, I never had any of these problems with my playstation 2 and am always very careful in looking after things that I buy. Mine is a 40GB, and ive got no memory space in my hardrive whatsoever. I dont play it that much and the games that I do save onto it only take up a tiny piece of the 40GB, yet its asking me to delete rediculous amounts of saved data in oreder to play certin games. Not only this But out of the 40GB space I have it says I ony have less tha 2GB left. Not only this when im online The screen freezes sometimes, and I cant rent out roleplaying games and RPg,s as at somepoint i know the scrennwill freeze and ill have to turn it off at the back! Is anybody else experiancing these problems to?

I got the YLOD of death last weekend. I've got a 60GB launch model. I tried the Hair Dryer trick and it worked for me. I transferred all my data to a new ps3 and deactivated the old one.
