Re: Backing up a broken PS3's hard drive?

I got this on an old system of mine. I have been thinking, would a new hard drive work? Screw the data, I would be thankful to get the system working again!

I wouldn't trust anyone except Sony.

Re: Backing up a broken PS3's hard drive?

Take out the hard drive. Then send your PS3 to Sony to be fixed. Once they send it back, reinsert your hard drive. Then hold down the power button until the PS3 shut off again. Afterwards, hold down the power button again until you hear two quick beeps. Then plug your controller into the PS3 via USB cable and select the option "Restore File System" and as long as it isn't badly corrupt you shall have all of your data back. Sorry for posting this late, didn't see this post.

^^^^^^ It doesn't work that way...

When you send in a PS3 for repair, the system ID will be changed, so when the drive is put back in, the PS3 will format it, erasing all data

The same thing would happen if you did a full system backup, then say a couple of days later your PS3 died, when you get it back from being repaired and try to restore the backup data, you won't be able to because of a different system ID

However,if you take a drive out of a PS3, and put the same drive back in, the PS3 won't format it because the system ID won't have changed.....so no loss of data
