Hi:
If I get a USB drive, and I backup with the option, will it save my downloaded games and maps? Is there anything it won't save? I'm thinking of upgrading to the slim and was wondering what was the best way to do that.
Thanks

The back up utility will save everything onto the external hard drive but is only for restoration onto the same ps3. If you had to restore it onto a different machine (after a YLOD for example), then only non protected save files and videos etc would come through.
Everything else would disappear into the ether.

The best way is to use the PS3 to PS3 direct transfer.
The reason for this is that ALL CONTENT (including copy protected items) are transfered.
If you create a backup (to an external device) NO copy protected data will be transfered to the new PS3. A backup will however restore everything (including copy protected data) to the same PS3.

Hope my 40 GB first run fat holds out until I have the cash to buy a slim, then. Many thanks.

Thinking about it, if you are a PS+ subscriber, you could always use the Cloud Save storage for the copy protected files. (FYI, the current free 30day sub does not allow you to use this feature)
I had no problems saving all of my game saves to the Online Storage folder using my free 30 day subscription to playstation plus.

True however there is caveats with this...LBP doesn't come across and neither does Singstar songs that you bought and downloaded....also as many users including myself found out when you do a PS3 to PS3 transfer it actually takes the OS from the source PS3 and puts it on the new PS3 and it can corrupt, not in a way you wll notice but if you try and backup the new PS3 to a USB HD that had the its contents transferred from an old PS3 you will find you cannot back it up.
This caused me a lot of grief and technical support confirmed it is a bug and you must format the HD. I was unwilling to do that so I waited till Cloud Saves were in place, backed up my saves and then had to reformat my new PS3 and download all 90 of my PSN games again because I could not backup my PS3 due to the OS being transferred from the old PS3 and it corrupts.
That was from a 60GB phat to a slim so that may be the issue.

littlebigplanet games saves and levels can be saved though, you just have to follow the instructions on their website.
Read my other post here if you have not done so, as you may still be able to get your littlebigplanet saves and levels back (if you kept your old PS3 hard drive and you still also have a working PS3 that the hard drive came from).
Interesting to hear about the problems that you had after the transfer, as I transfered my own data from a 60GB (upgraded to 500GB) FAT to a 320GB slim as well via Ethernet.
Did you get an error while trying to back up the slim to USB?, or an error when trying to restore the data?.
I'm pretty sure I have restored some game saves at least from USB which I had copied from the 2nd PS3 to USB and back again.
