Backwards compatible

I thought that the PS3 was 100% backwards compatible. Is there a cut off date of this feature? My husband tried to play the original Drakkan and it would not play.

[ Edited ]

ps1 game disc's about 90%  work on all ps3

Ps2 games disc's on PS3 PHAT 60GB

below 50% compatabillity

PS3 slim with ps2 game disc's

0% backwards compatabillity

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Re: Backwards compatible

All PS3's can play PSone disk based games the original 20 and 60 gig and some 80 gig US Phat models could play PS2 disk based games via hardware/software emulation.

There is some PS2 games for download via the playstation store with the emulation file in the download they will work on all PS3 models.

20GB did not have BWC as that was supose to be the cheap version with out the added extra bits.

It was mainly 60GB but some 80GB made it through

I read somewhere the 20 gig was backwards compatible but didn't have a Wifi chip i don't think it ever reached the UK only imported from Japan etc.

I found that the 60's (despite the inharent YLOD problems) was the best made than every other phats the came out.

But yeah OP what these two have said is correct.

Re: Backwards compatible

Here's a link to Wikipedia, just to clarify eveything above.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3#Model_comparison

The 20gig was never released in PAL, so it was only available in Japan &  the USA.  Only noticable difference I can see from the article is no card readers, but I do remember it didn't have the silver trim like the 60 gig one had.

I honestly thought all ps3's where 100% backwards compatible also, but looking down the list (link below) there are some issue's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Backwards_incompatible_PS2_and_Playstation_games_list

hope this helps.
