'Bored gamers need fresh ideas'

[ Edited ]

With the UK game sales down 33% in year-on-year, Ubisoft's Alain Corre says it is caused by boring content and no innovation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

“There have been too many ‘me too’ games in the business in the last few years,” said Alain Corre, EMEA MD.

“After a while people will go ‘eh’ and move on. But give them something fresh and they’ll buy a console just for your game.

“All the creators have to take risks. So I was pleased to see that after the E3 presentations, there are a lot of new things on show.”

With appearances in all the major press conferences, plus a headline-grabbing debut for its new IP Watch Dogs, Ubisoft was singled out by many as the star of E3.

And its strategy for offering fresh content has been praised from one of the most powerful people in video games – PlayStation president Andrew House.

“Ubisoft has a genuine appetite for pursuing the new,” he told MCV.

“Our philosophies meld on this point, where we are are trying to deliver innovation at all points in the lifecycle.”

Corre added: “You need to be unique, original and to surprise people – take a risk on your products and gamers will take a risk on you. Then the market can start growing again.”

I was left shocked at the end of the MS conference with the amount of franchise sequels.

Yeah tbh since kinect has come around microsoft doesnt care about bringing exclusives to the xbox anymore. I will always prefer my 360 to ps3 for multiplayer gaming but ps3 is trumping 360 on exclusives atm.

Totally agree with TalllPaul post. The gaming industry is stale at the moment, but games like Beyond: Two Souls, Watch_Dogs and The Last of Us; would sure put some variety back into videogames. It's also about breaking boundaries in terms of tech like we've seen in SimCity with its GlassBox Engine, that does away with charts and graphs and makes all the statistics simulated. It's this innovation that gets me intersted in games as a whole.

Yet they make another Assassins Creed and try to be cleaver by calling it number 3 when in fact its the 5th game :smileyindifferent: Yet they make another Splinter Cell, another Rayman game, another Ghost Recon game.. :smileyindifferent:

Yeah one game, the rest are sequels of the same old thing.

I love original games. Although lots are awful, nothing beats the greatness of a successful original game.
