Well my 60gb ps3 finally died on me, it overheated and shut down on sunday, i went to play it on monday and it booted up fine, put gta4 in and it loaded and as soon as i left playboy X's apartment it froze and i got YLOD.
As im going to get a slim 250gb in august I was thinking can i use the harddrive from my dead ps3 as an external one if i get an enclosure for it?
anyone recommened an enclosure?
its a 3.5mm western digital harddrive aint it?
any other parts i can salvage for use? and what can i do with my dead ps3 to dispose of it?
thanks![]()

You sure can, 2.5" enclosure in needed. I purchased a couple from ebay recently, does the job nicely, powered from the usb.

How do you do this guys? My 40GB system broke (blinking red light) so I bought new 120GB slim and got an 2.5 inch sata external usb enclosure. I connected the HD to the enclosure but the new PS3 isnt detecting it when I plug it into the USB. Any ideas why?
I have all my game saves on it and wondered if I could pull them off but like I say, PS3 doesnt detect the HD. Would it need formatting first thereby losing my game saves?

Nothing you can do mate. A PC can't read a PS3 formatted hard drive. You can't put the hard drive in your new machine as it will ask to format. The reason your PS3 won't detect your old hard drive is because it's still formatted for your old PS3. A PS3 system can only read hard drives that are formatted as FAT32 when used externally.

You'll have to format the drive to make it usable - you won't be able to get any of your data off of it.

why should he have to format it when it came out of a ps3. i never had to format my external hdd but my enclosure came with two usb wires to a mini usb for hdd caddy. When changing hdd you must have the latest firmware update on a usb pen or a external hdd as it will ask for it,
He has to format it as it's come out of his dead PS3. A PS3 won't read an external HDD unless it's formatted to FAT32.

^^ This. You will have to re-format to FAT32, its not hard you can use a free program like swissknife or partition wizard.
many external hdd are already formated to FAT32, which is way they will work out of the box, the one from inside you PS3 will need reformating.
Dont sweat it tho, with the right tools its a 5 second job, if you havnt got the tools then it will only take a couple of mins to google, download and install a program to do the job.
