Considering getting a PS3

yo!

I spotted that PS3's are getting cheaper these days and was considering taking the plundge and getting one after my exams in may.

i got a few questions i'd like unput from current owners for...

Any point in getting the PS3 slim vs the origional model?

how much hard disk space is "sufficient"?

logistically would buying a preowned PS3 be problematic?

thoughts?

Any point in getting the PS3 slim vs the origional model? They only make the slim now 160GB and 320GB

how much hard disk space is "sufficient"?depnds on what you plan to download you can always change the HDD at a latter date if it is too small

logistically would buying a preowned PS3 be problematic?I always buy new as you never know how the previous owner has treated it.

Well worth an investment.

Re: Considering getting a PS3

Any point in getting the PS3 slim vs the original model? Theth slims have bigger hard drives, they are more energy efficient, they are quieter and don't suffer with the dreaded YLOD as much as the older consoles. However you will lose PS2 playabillity that the old 60gb PS3's had. With the prices of slim PS3's being about £170 it's alot better to get one of them for that price than getting a older PS3 for about £90

how much hard disk space is "sufficient"? Depends, I have a 160gb PS3, I have had it since january and I have 100gb free. If you were to use it to store 100's of CD's and DVD's then that may be an issue. As the other guy said, you can always swap them with laptop hard drives.

logistically would buying a preowned PS3 be problematic? Yes, I am speaking from experience. I bought a 60gb PS3 from ebay for about £90. 2 and a half weeks later it suffered the YLOD, I had to spend £50 on getting it fixed by a 3rd party. You never know what the console's been treated like, unfortunately older PS3's are like a ticking time bomb, you never know what will happen to it.

Logistically buying anything from ebay is a risk.

I have had 2 used ps3's which i bought both from Game but i got extended an warranty with each of them.

When my first used ps3 died i sent it of to who ever game have that asses broken ps3's & got 75% of the cost of my ps3 back.

And the second used ps3 i'm am still using now with the same assurance that if it dies it will either get repaired or i will get most of my money towards another ps3.

Re: Considering getting a PS3

buy a new slim. 160gb is more than enough for most people but see what bundle offers are about. Sometimes it can work out practically the same getting a 320gb bundled with a game compared to a 160gb and the same game separately.

I have seen people say their ps3 has broken, they "fixed" it using a method that is more often than not temporary and trade it in for a new one.
I wouldn't risk pre-owned for the hassle it can cause.

Slim is what's sold new in shops nowadays. Best stick with New as preowned can be problematic.

You can buy the cheapest PS3 and upgrade the HDD to 1TB if you like for £76.00.

Re: Considering getting a PS3

With a second hand one you also won't know if the previous owner had been a bad boy and got a ban for the console meaning no online play for you

Re: Considering getting a PS3

thanks for the input peeps!

Ok so from what i've read so far...

there are a number of benifits to the slim, revolving around energy efficiency and noise. However the slim dosn't play PS2 tittles (and man i've got a few old disks from my cusen that i'd kinda like to play through... i know i'm WAY behind on console gaming XD).

Preowned Vs New:
New : less likely to brake, no "baggage" from the previous owner being a supertramp and getting banned.
Pre-owned: potentially a bit cheaper, be sure to get a warranty though!

Does that all seem accurate? With a pre-owned model will it do anything like say i can't regester my PSN acount on it cause it is "sombody elses machine"? or any gay crap like that? or is it just if its been banned?

thanks for all you're input

Re: Considering getting a PS3

I have a pre-owned 80Gb.

It's still going after 2 years, and the previous owner hadn't got it banned.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

Re: Considering getting a PS3

Stick with a slim, if you want to play PS2 games pick up a pre-owned PS2 slim (dirt cheap and the games look better than on the PS3 and no compatibility issues). If you think you'd like a bigger HDD then pick up the 160GB slim and swap out the HDD straight away.
Avoid pre-owned unless cash is the issue, all other points you're bang on correct.
