Could Sony do their own take on a Operation Flashpoint style "War Sim"?

If any of you can remember the awesomeness that was/is Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis on the PC you will notice the complete lack of anything like it on consoles. Aren't you just about sick of linear titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield 3 by now?

I'am, and i know it would be a massive hit if sony could do something like OP flashpoint cold war crisis for us.

It has to be totally open meaning no "you're leaving the battle area" if you try to go too far away from team mates,

Base the troop and vehicle wepon damage on real life stats or as close as it is possible to get in a game, this way there can be no complaints by anyone like you see on Battlefiled 3 and Call of Duty about weapons being overpowered or underpowered - If its based on true real life stats the simple answer to those crying about "this weapon is OP it needs nerfed" would be "tough".

This would also mean if you get shot you'll either need medical help before you could continue, or your team mate will need a body bag, no lame regenerations to full health or instant revives.

Must have bullet drop which is also affected by the wind.

Also Keyboard and mouse support.

OR, I wonder if Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis could even be made to work on PS3 seeing as it was released back in 2002/3? would the PS3 even be able handle that? LOL

What do you all think, is there a market for proper war sims on consoles, and what would you like to see?

Because if you're basing weapons from around the world on real life stats then they will all be randomly different and unbalanced, thus making it one-sided and not much fun.

You can't just say ''tough'' to the underpowered team with the low stats weaponry up against say the likes of the Russian AK47.

But this is exactly how it was in real life.

Also, the game doesnt have to be structured in the usual way where guns are kept seperate,

It could start out that way where the nation you're playing as will have its own weapon types, but as you kill enemies you culd obatain their weapons and then they can be accessed via your loadout. this is something i think would switch it all up in the FPS genre.

Also the idea of having training in these war sims is to actually use them and get a good feel for your equipment, before heading out into the game, i know a lot of people would just try and jump straight in, but that's up to them the others guys who did use the training would be getting easy kills from them.

But in real life you 'fight' to win. You die its game over for good.

In games you 'play' to win while having fun. Its not going to be fun how you're suggesting with that it follows true to real life.

I understand where you are coming from, but it just can't see it working in the gaming world unless tweaks are made to balance the sides out evenly :smileywink:

So i guess the only place you'd likely ever find that type of game (OP flashpoint & Arma) is on the PC as the console scene is too "casual" and only seeking "fun" games?

I actually had a go of Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crsis last night just to refresh my memory, and i have to say that old game still has it all.

I tried the sniper mission where you're escorted by two Special Ops guys and you have to assassinate two Officers who're in a militry base near the beach. I had to track my way there using the map and compass, and also check the way was clear every now and then with the binoculors, needless to say I didn't make it.

I did how ever manage to kill one of the officers, but then they send a bunch of soldiers after you (to where the last known gun fire was heard) and the patrolling BMP put me off making an approach on the other side to be able to hold down a clear beach line, so i got killed at the edge of the forrest every time.

The AI in the game are brutal and i had it on Normal difficulty LOL.

Anyway, It would be nice to have an updated version of that game on PS3 as it is still way beyond anything Dragon Rising or Red River is (except graphics of course). but seeing as its a Codemasters title i couldn't ever see them doing anything with it in terms of putting it on the PS3 as they have already said the'yre focusing on racing games : (

No, you're taking what I say out of context. But you might be right in one sense because games are cheaper to develop and publish for the PC then on consoles.

And I'm not a PC so I cannot comment on what those games are like to play either.

I'm not saying we don't want hardcore style games because I prefer them, but they do not sell these days and developers don't like to take any big risks.

No.

I suppose they could have done it just a year ago, but Sony shut down their Zipper Interactive studio back in march. Zipper developed MAG and was the only one of Sonys internal development studios that would have been able to develop a good war sim, at least as far as I'm concerned. Now, MAG wasn't particulary war sim-ish, but at least it was reasonably close. Compared to say, Polyphony Digital who only have a history of developing racing games, they would most likely not make a good war sim.

So yeah, if you want to play a war sim today, you need to get ARMA2 for the PC, or wait for the upcoming ARMA3. The ARMA series is also developed by Bohemia Interactive, which is the same studio that developed Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (Codemasters merely published it). Bohemia and Codemasters then went separate ways, Bohemia continued with their war sims but since they didn't own the Operation Flashpoint IP, they couldn't use that name. While Codemasters did own the name and turned the series into a crappy shooter one.

All signatures sucks, especially those with images in them.

I was just asking that question to get your opinion, I didn't mean it to take what you had said out of context.

So when you say you like hardcore games, does that go to the extent of the likes of OP flashpoint cold war crisis where you must be very careful when you plan your attacks, maneovers and exit, and where you have limited ammo, and could only carry the amount of equipment as they would in real life?

......

That to me is what Im looking for, of course I'd like the game to have decent graphics and effects to go with all that realism, as well as having bullet drop which is also affected by wind.

I think for this type of game, co-op would be a much stronger angle than PVP multiplayer and i guess having just the co-op you would (or should) mean we'd be able to have a decent co-op sqaud perhaps at least 12 people.
