Currently, you can only choose a animation picture to be your avatar. Yes, a animation picture is the avatar of player's their profile. Personally, I think that's too simple for the PlayStation 3. It's obvious that Sony hasn't given this a lot of attention, which they should have. Although many players don't even care about avatars; when you would be able to create your own, I'm sure you'd be interested.
Anyway, avatar creation is all about you designing your own animated 'doll'. These dolls will be called avatar (you won't have to call it your doll or stuff like that). You design it by choosing hair styles, eyes, clothes etc. until you have a suitable avatar. If you wish to change it, then that's always possible.
Can't explain all of it, but I'm pretty sure you can imagine stuff yourself. So, post what's on your mind if you think that would make this suggestion more complete.
P.S.: We all know the Xbox 360 has this kind of thing already (-.-'), but the PlayStation 3 should have a more advanced one. It will definitively make everything more fun than it already is.
People might hate on Sony for it, but the worse thing men can do is criticize, right?
