Re: EA Games shutdown

They give a reason:

'as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running'

Still, annoying for that 1% I guess.

Re: EA Games shutdown

when people pay for the servers even if there is only one paying customers, they should keep it up and running. but it looks like ea are more eager to take down the servers than removing the online passes from psn...

So where have EA ever asked for server payments from customers.

They could have gone down the lazy route & not supply servers for players.

the online pass is a server payment.

they have stated in many interviews that the online passes are to cover server costs because no revenue is being recieved from the second hand market to cover the continual server costs.

the problem is that the online pass is being sold right up until the point the server shuts down and if the above poster is to believed they are sold after the server shuts down too.

if you pay for access to the server you should be able to access it.

the online passes should be sold with clear terms and conditions stating that the pass is time limited.  the full RRP costs include the cost for server upkeep and also should be sold with the fine print clearly stating that the server can be taken down at EA's will.

lets face it,  the servers close year on year.  that [generic ea sports title] [year] only has online multiplayer value for a year.

Re: EA Games shutdown

They do seem to close servers very quickly, its kind of understandable with fifa i suppose, the old titles start selling for peanuts the moment a new one comes out. Its not really in their interest to keep them going.

Online pass selling could make these early closure decisions a lot more dubious in the future though.

Every game publisher has does this; so it's not something new. EA just like to make big announcements of things. There is something you can do though and that's... Move on, don't dwell on the past; live for the future.

I'm not too fussed about the server shut downs of year old titles, because i no longer rush out and buy them each season, I'm not that desperate to get the one or two new skill move sets they add or one or two new features,, and its their equipment and their choice what they do with servers anyway,i think it would be better if people send them a message that they will not accept rehased games each year with a few lousy new things added to it, by NOT buying the games every year.

I'm just annoyed that  the likes of FIFA 12 will get released in 2011, when really they should be leaving the release untill after the transfer window opens in January 2012 so as to get the rosters down for release, not auto update afterward when you have already started a manager mode, and certainly not release the game in August 2011 (or whenever).

I still have Fifa 10, i didnt bother with 11 or 12,, but I did buy Tiger 12 but only to use the PS Move with it.
