Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

Got the same problem with the 2TB usb3 edition :smileysad:

It's fat32 formatted, I don't see a VCD (I guess it's default disabled? and the download is not working for the tool).

It doesn't even turn on when I connect it to my PS3 :smileysad:

Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

Could someone please suggest a good reasonably cheap external HDD, that is PS3 compatible, as im in the process of trying to get one, but dont really know where to start?

I reckon 500g tops would be plenty for me. Thanks

Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

Following worked for me for WD My Passport Essential 1TB USB 3.0.

Used Partition Magic to delete all partition and created a new partition FAT32 as 'Logical' drive - should not be 'primary' drive - size 196GB by default make it slightly less about 192GB. I did not give any label for the partition.

Connected the HDD through a USB hub (Imation USB Hub)  to PS3 and PS3 recognised the device as 'WD My Passport 0730'.

Connected to the PC again and using Partition Magic created another partition for the unallocated space in NTFS format (Logical).

Now all ok.

Note: Makesure to use the USB cable that came alongwith the HDD to connect to USB Hub.

Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

I was about to give up hope, but the USB Hub actually worked! I think that the problem has something to do with a compatibility issue with the USB 3.0.

Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

I have a World Disk Passport Essential 1TB with a usb 3.0 and it wasn't recognized on new PS3 skinny 120GB. Without partitioning or reformatting (it came as FAT32) I was able to get the PS3 to recognize it by using a USB2.0 hub (aka my apple keyboard that has usb slots on the sides; I plugged my external hard drive into the keyboard (usb hub) and plugged that into the PS3). I think it is a recognition issue and not a partition issue. The usb 2.0 hub trick should work for other frustrated users, whatever that usb hub may be.

Re: External hard drive not recognized by PS3

I bought a WD My Passport 750gb last week, it was not recognised by my PS3.

I downloaded one reformatting program, took about 1 minute to reformat.

Plugged it in and worked fine and have been using it ever since.

If anyone has issues with this, drop me a message I will look what program I used and let you know.

And for the guy looking for a deal, I got mine for about £55 on Pixmania.

Seemed the best deal I could find for a WD My Passport. I could've paid 15quid more for a  1tb or so, but I didn't need that much.
