FIFA 12 moderate firewall status...

Hi All,

Any help appreciated...

I have two PS3s connected to my modem/ router, one wired and one wirelessly. Both have static IP's set-up. The wired one is placed in the DMZ, and the wireless one has all of its ports open as required for PSN and FIFA 12. Both of them still show the firewall status as 'Moderate'. I think this is causing random dissconnections and slow performace in many FUT games i have played online.

I dont know much about networking etc but I am certain the DMZ and open ports are correctly entered in and active.

On both PS3's i manually set-up the connections.
IP addresses are all correct, DNS settings are correct, MTU is automatic, Proxy server 'do not use', uPnP 'Available' and NAT type two.

Any ideas??? thanks in advance...

Hi sancho,

Have you tried an isolation test? - Testing each machine in isolation (ie. with no other devices using that network, incl. the other PS3, any computers or iDevices etc).

Try Restore Default Settings via 'Settings' -> System Settings.

Run through network setup from scratch and choose the Easy / Automatic setup options.

Hi Sancho,

you can either port forward specific ports or DMZ which forwards pretty much everything unless the router knows specifically what host device a packet is bound for. This means that it won't work very well if you have two devices using the same ports and put one in DMZ and port forward to the other.

I would remove all port forwarding and DMZ entries for both PS3s

Standard PSN ports can all be handled by UPnP and UPnP is the only way to reliably put two PS3s on one network behind a NAT router (I do wish they'd hurry up with IPV6).

I don't know about FIFA though. Do you play FIFA on both PS3s simultaneously? If not just port forward the FIFA ports to that PS3. Do not add any other ports and leave DMZ out altogether.

For the record, what brand and model is your router and who is your ISP?

Re: FIFA 12 moderate firewall status...

Thanks for your replies...

Just to clear something up. I only ever play one of them at a time, the only reason I mentioned that there is one on wireless and one on wired is because I wanted to clear up that it wasnt a wired/ wireless problem.

Just for my understanding... If UPNP is enabled does that mean i dont need to worry about the DMZ or opening ports?

So using both DMZ and opening ports shouldnt be done? Even if they are assigned to their individual IP addresses (each ps3)?

I am using a Billion 7800n and I am with Bigpond.

Thanks again!

Yes, UPnP is meant to open those ports up for you on demand, under the control of the PS3(s). However some games do not use the same ports that the PS3 uses by default (COD for example) and those ports sometimes need to be forwarded to the relevant device manually.

You cannot use DMZ and port forwarding together for identical devices. For example if the router receives a packet through a port that is forwarded to one PS3, but that packet is intended for the PS3 in DMZ, it will go to the wrong PS3, which will probably not know what it was for and just drop it (hopefully).

I use a Billion 7800n too. I have had no trouble with online games (but I don't play COD or FIFA).

Another thing to consider is how you assign static IPs to your PS3s. By far the best method for this is to set a fixed IP for the PS3 on the router (go to Advanced > LAN > DHCP Server > Fixed Host )

Assign the PS3 a hostname and IP address and fill in the MAC address. The IP address should be outside the range of dhcp addresses (i.e. greater than 192.168.1.25 on my router). Then use the Easy setup on the PS3. This allows your router to assign all of the other settings such as subnet mask, DNS and gateway and gives it an accessible hostname on your local network.Screenshot at 2012-01-13 17:31:58.png
