Formatting a HDD

So I've just bought a brand new HDD online and I was wondering how I format it? I don't want all the old game data and videos etc off the old one. Also my playstations current HDD is currupt meaning I cannot play the playstation now. How do I format the new one with or without using my playstation?

just put the drive into the ps3, it will format it when it boots up, afaik that's the only way as the ps3 uses a format unreadable by a pc
