Re: Game store feels like a car showroom

Given my university course and working in game/DVD/electronics retail for a long time I can tell you there are around four different types of customer. This forum is the incorrect demographic to judge whether people in GAME or other retailers do or do not need help. People who surf these types of forums most likely do not.

It's strange how much people seem to value my help and opinion when working, people like yourself that don't like to be bugged and "helped" are the ones that only wan't to know they made the right choice! ;D

I like to think that I know a hell of a lot about games and gadgetry and enjoy being able to help people make decisions etc etc. I'm not on commisson, it's just satisfying knowing you have helped. Thus liking to approach people or being a "techknight" as its known in the CEX biz lol.

Was in the Wigan branch of Game today and was looking at the slim as Im hopefully trading in my 60GB for one soon and a woman who works there wanders over (you know like they do in car showrooms when their trying to push you to buy) and starts recommending the slim and told me they would give me £180 for my 60GB which isn't a bad offer (yes I know about the Gamestation price match to CEX).

Anyway I know she was just doing her job and I've got nothing against it and I'm not complaining as she was very friendly but I never got it in game stores before and I most certainly never get them coming over to me in Gamestation even though they've been taken over by Game if I remember correctly.

My point is I am just curious and was wondering if anyone else who has been to the Wigan or any other branch of the Game stores and experienced this?

I wouldn't speak too soon mate.  The Liverpool and surrounding area branches of GS are all being told to use that method of offering help to people who haven't asked for it.  I personally think if someone needs help they should just ask but i've seen many people who have been in the shop for 20 mins looking for a certain game until someone asked if they needed help and found the game for them.  Some people dont know when they need help and thats why staff have to offer it before they walk out the door in frustration of not finding something they want and not bothering to ask for help.

GS regional management are now under the impression that a sale is lost everytime someone walks out the shop.  I know that is not completely true as some people just come in to look around for something to do but there are a lot of people out there who know nothing or little about games who do need help and its not for us to judge who those people are.

Even though staff are always there to help there are still people who dont ask for it who need it and thats why we have to ask everyone.

I hate people coming up to me in shops its a good job i'm a bit hard faced so i just put it on a bit more and there's not many that bother you lmao.

Or walk in looking like you know what you want, wich 99% of the time i do anyway so they leave you then as well.

They do this, because a lot of people that need help wont ask. Its like that where I work, you should always acknowledge the customer

Well, not really.

The consumer has no need to approach other people in a shop...nor is it their job to do so

Security approach you only if you trigger off a beep upon leaving the store.

They will be told to approach customers, especially in mobile phone shops etc...

I've never entered a store wanting someone to come up and ask me what I want to buy. I go in either knowing what I want or just browsing. If i'm not sure on something, i'll ask someone, not the other way around.

Usually I just say thanks, I'm ok but there was one time in Game where a lady walked up to me literally as I stepped through the door and asked me if I needed help, and I politely said no. Not one minute later she came up to me again and said "Hello sir, do you need any help" at which point I politely but firmly said "No thank you, I still don't need any help and I am intelligent enough to know when I do, so if I do I will come and ask you, thank you" and she left me alone after that :smileyvery-happy:

I know it is their job to do so and there is no excuse for being rude but it needs to be toned down a bit nowadays. It's like those ***** people always ringing me up asking if I need a new kitchen or windows. I mean come on, I'm big enough and old enough to make that decision by myself, thanks very much!

A bit rude that...Anyway i got the Gamestation warranty for 3 years, which they've assured me that if anything goes wrong with Slimmy during the 3 years i can bring it to the store and get a replacement, not bad for £14.99

How did you manage to get a 3 year warranty for £14.99

I wasn't rude to her, was just sarcastic (I made it sound a bit more stand offish here than I actually said it).

Anyway that's not the point, the point was she approached me twice within one minute! She didn't even speak to anyone else in between. And yes she was fit IIRC :smileyvery-happy:
