Games jerky / choppy when downloaded & run off internal hard drive

Hi Guys,

Does anyone else experience this:

I've downloaded a few games (Smash Cars, Split Second Velocity & Sega Rally) from the Playstation Store and installed them to my internal hard drive. When playing these games off the hdd, they all seem to be quite glitchy...ie. the graphics, frame rate & motion seems quite jerky. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm actually thinking of purchasing Split Second Velocity on Blu-Ray Disc (since its cheap) to determine whether:

- its a problem with my hard drive,

- the games on the PSN are compressed???hence lower quality???

- its due to the 5400rpm hdd spinning a lot slower than Bluray.

- hdd with bad sectors slowing down the performance of my PS3

Also, my internal hdd is a WD 500GB unit...so maybe if I get a 7200rpm hdd or a different branded hdd, maybe the choppiness would reduce...hmm...not sure. Please also know that games like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (on Bluray) run very smoothly.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Re: Games jerky / choppy when downloaded & run off internal hard drive

it is not the 5400rpm drive, that is the same as the drive that ALL PS3's come with, and is incomprehensibly faster than the BluRay drive and PSN games are not compressed in any way that should cause that (but errors can occur so you can try deleting and re-installing them), but either way it sounds like there is something going wrong somewhere

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to back-up the PS3 and put the original 120GB Toshiba hdd back in to see if that fixes the problem with the jerkiness...maybe my WD 500GB hdd is corrupted a little bit...not sure. At least if the problem still occurs with the original hdd I might get it checked out under warranty (jb hifi extended warranty).

Anyone else got any other ideas???

Re: Games jerky / choppy when downloaded & run off internal hard drive

When you downloaded those games did you download them using a WIFI connection? If so their could of been momentary drop outs during the download to cause a corruption or a problem with the download maybe try using a different connection to download them either borrowing a friends or family members wifi or in turn using a wired connection?? Just an idea

Good suggestion, but I have a LAN cable directly connected to the PS3. Any more ideas guys?

First thing I would do is delete the game data and re download it. I would try it without background downloading.

Thanks mate, I will give that a try. I was always scared of doing this and losing both the game & my hard earned dough. How does my PS3 & the Playstation Store know that I have already downloaded the game when the game data has been deleted?

Because your list of purchases is tied to your PSN (now SEN) account and stored on the server, not on your PS3.

Re: Games jerky / choppy when downloaded & run off internal hard drive

Could it be a good old lack of HDD free space?
