HDD 97/111GB on Sept 09 PS3 Slim 120GB Model.

I have one of the first models of the PS3 Slim. I got it during the middle of May 2010. The HDD is 111GB. But fresh, it's actually 97gb, meaning it's not a 120gb console and not even a 111gb console. I was just wondering if doing that monsterously stupid full format time length of over 10 hours+ is worth it and will it get any of my space back past the 97gb mark? Quick Formatting only gets me the usual 97?

Just wondering as well... since this is my only PS3, I've not actually bought anything but I have redeemed my Black Ops avatar and Zombie pack but am I able to infinitely disable my console before formatting and still be able to use it as many times as I want? (So long as it's disabled first - and what happens if I don't disable? Will I lose 1 install, even though it's the same machine, same serial, etc etc?)

I'm not overly bothered by the space of the drive, I just want it all nice and squeaky clean and as free as possible.

Thanks

it is the way hdd's work out, hardware manafacturers work 1 gb out as this - 1000MB=1GB, but software always goes - 1024MB=1GB, so after format that gives you 111GB then system reserve for the ps3 will leave you 97GB, the ps3 usually takes 8-10% for system use.

Re: HDD 97/111GB on Sept 09 PS3 Slim 120GB Model.

I'm know you never get the entire drive, but I was unaware hardware manufacturers work a gigabyte out as 1000mb. 97 is OK I guess. Didn't expect 23gb lost. I thought the system would have reserved less out of the 111 available.

Thanks for tht anyway.

Any answers to my query regarding redeemable codes and activating and deactivating? I was also wondering if there is any benefit to a Full Forma?. As a PC user I understand how formats work and what not but I don't quite understand why the PS3 insists on having silly format times 7-10+ hours for 97 GB seems an awful lot. Cell chip too slow? HDD too slow? What's going on?

Thx

nothing wrong with a quick format, you don't have to de activate the system if your just formatting, only if your selling or it nearly breaks

with regards to format times i think it does a low level format on full which can take along time.

I like to use the restore PS3 feature. Clears settings and formats but it says to deactivate my system first if I have bought stuff from the store. Since the redeemable code for a Black Ops Avatar outfit and the WAW Zombie Maps for Black ops is only redeemable so many times, I figured I best deactivate the machine first.

Low level format? Why does it take over 7+ hours (more like 10) to clearn 97gb, most of which has not been written to at all? (Factory 0's).

I'll just do Restore PS3 System later, and do the Quick Format option. I can't be dealing with 7-10 hour format times, that's beyond ridiculous. Mustn't forget to deactivate my PS3 first :smileywink:

Re: HDD 97/111GB on Sept 09 PS3 Slim 120GB Model.

I think its false advertising if somone says you have 120gb of space, but will only ever get 97gb. If the user only gets 97gb to use, then that's what should be advertised.

Not quite sure a PS3 needs 10% of HDD. There is absolutely no difference between a 120gb and 320gb slim aside from the HDD. So why does it need nearly three times the HDD space?? Just incase you missed the obvious, 10% of 320gb is 32gb's. 12gb for 120gb. Where is the benefit?
